Varvara (Varya) Mashanskaya is a filmmaker born in Russia (Moscow) in 2000. It was at the age of 7 that she started directing for the first time, making the animated film in Palma studio under patronage of Jewish Cultural Centre of Moscow. She directed her first short film Вarefoot at the Moscow Cinema School in 2016. In 2018, Varya Mashanskaya was admitted to the preparatory classes in VGIK, the National Institute of cinematography named after S. A. Guerassimov, where she created the mini show The Witch. Then in 2020 she joined Haute école d'art et de design (HEAD) in Geneva. The transposition of subjectivity to the screen is of particular interest to her. In her cinema, she tries to explore the miracle of everyday life via magical realism as well as existential subjects like death and loneliness. In her films she tries to erase the link between reality and imagination to explore the unconscious and the nature of fantasy.
