Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola creates a circuit between the amateur and the professional (…and vice versa)

The school's partner institutions (Basque Film Archive, Tabakalera International Centre of Contemporary Culture, San Sebastián Film Festival) take an active role in the educational programme by passing on their experience and knowledge to students. As part of the centre's educational philosophy and by virtue of the physical conditions of the building itself, work experience positions are organically interwoven into the teaching plan.

Given the fact that the School is a centre created by collaboration between these institutions, training in these work spaces is conceived as being a genuine process of passing on experience. The practical training sessions are tutored by highly-qualified professionals and are designed as platforms towards employability in the future.

EQZE has signed collaboration agreements with other external institutions to enable students to engage in extracurricular work experience and professional training. These institutions include the Azkuna Zentroa (Bilbao), the Portuguese Film Archive (Lisbon) and the Spanish Film Archive.

Over the course of the academic year, EQZE students may engage in a minimum of 100 hours of work experience. Work experience is run from June to December

Basque Film Archive

The Basque Film Archive was founded in 1978, when it became the first of the so-called ‘Regional Film Libraries’ in Spain. From the outset, its goal was to conduct research, recovery, archiving, conservation and dissemination of films and audiovisual material that were relevant to the study of film in general and Basque cinema in particular. It also collects and preserves documents and technical material of cultural or historical interest.

When the Film Library began operating, it had a total of 600 metres of film. Today, it has five million metres in film format and further seventeen million metres in video format. It also stores the collections of the San Sebastian International Film Festival, among others.

Since 1994, it has been a member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) and from 2022 full member of the institution. As the only film archive in the Basque Country, it has become a major reference point for researchers, producers, distributors, broadcasters and students, etc.

Conceived as an International Film Week for the purpose of screening and marketing films, it was not long before the IFFPA granted it B status (non-competitive), thanks to the success of its first edition. A year later it was called the International Film Festival, and in 1955 the IFFPA recognised the festival as competitive, specialising in colour films. In other words, it could now grant official prizes. This marked the emergence of the "Concha", or shell - at the time only awarded in silver - determined by an international jury.

In 1957 the festival was granted "A" status and the Shell awarded in the main categories turned to gold. The festival symbols became increasingly recognisable, as did the direction the festival was aiming for and still strives for to this day. That is, a tendency towards liberalisation, shying away from the corseted censorship of the past, still alive today. The festival's primordial role is to serve as a showcase for each year's most disquieting and innovative films.

In recent years the Festival has strengthened its commitment to industry activities, particularly focussed on Latin American productions and films in non-hegemonic European languages, and to new talents thanks to Nest Film Students, the Ikusmira Berriak residencies and project development programme and Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola.
