EQZE has opened its doors to the sixth intake year. The 2023-2024 academic year starts today and will conclude in December 2024, with the presentation of the assignments carried out at the school. The 46 students accepted onto the course were selected by the school’s Academic Management Team from among the 215 applications received from thirty different countries during the admissions period. 16 students will be receiving study scholarships, thanks to the grants awarded by Ibermedia, the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council’s Culture Department and the Paradiso Project

A committee made up of members of Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola and the San Sebastian Festival made their decision last month on the three research grants promoted by the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council’s Department of Culture. The proposals chosen by the committee were those of Felipe Cabrerizo, Endika Rey and EQZE alumni Neus Sabaté “for the appropriate nature of their topic and methodology, their contribution at theoretical level to knowledge of national and international cinematography, and their use of the Festival archive as their primary resource”.

Four Cuban films digitised in EQZE to be screened at Archival Assembly #2

Today at Arsenal - Institut für Film und Videokunst e.V. in Berlin, four Cuban films digitised in the framework of the research project "Second Hand. Reuse and Deviations in Ibero-American Cinema" of EQZE. These short films (El negro by Eduardo Manet (1960), L.B.J. by Santiago Álvarez (1968), 79 primaveras by Santiago Álvarez (1969) and Oración by Marisol Trujillo, Miriam Talavera and Pepín Rodríguez (1984)) come from the holdings of Cinemateca de Cuba and are part of a wider ongoing research on the production of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry ICAIC. This screening is part of the activities of the festival Archival Assembly #2.

World premiere of "Vitanuova" at FICUNAM

The latest work by Chilean filmmaker Niles Atallah is part of the Umbrales section, dedicated to experimental film. Vitanuova was developed in EQZE's photochemical laboratory under the coordination of Asier Armental, with the collaboration in the development and digitalisation of Celeste Rojas Múgica and Laura Óliver, students of Filmmaking and Film Preservation Studies from the fifth income of the centre. FICUNAM will also screen the films of two other students: Canto Errante by Génesis Valenzuela and While the Vines Weep by Laura Moreno Bueno.

Presentation of the third issue of the ZINE magazine

This Saturday will take place the public presentation of the third issue of the ZINE magazine published by Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Filmoteca Vasca and the San Sebastian Festival. The presentation will be attended by Beñat Sarasola, researcher, and Maialen Beloki, deputy director of SSIFF, authors of the main texts of the magazine dedicated, in this case, to the film work of Koldo Izagirre and the biofilmography of Antxon Eceiza. The presentation will be followed by a screening of Ke arteko egunak by Antxon Eceiza.

Before that, at 18:00, Maialen Beloki will present his publication "Antxon Eceiza. Vidas, tiempos, obras", published by the Shangrila association, accompanied by Santos Zunzunegui.

"Zehn Minuten vor Mitternacht" directed by Mario Sanz and "Los espantos" by Jorge Castrillo, alumni of the first and second class, are part of the Peninsulas section of the festival. Curtocircuíto will also dedicate a session to the new restoration of the film work of Eugenio Granell (1912-2001). The restoration has been carried out at EQZE by a group of students made up of Borja Rodríguez, Amaia Badiola, Julia Cortegana de la Fuente and Pablo Adiego led by Carolina Cappa. The Eugenio Granell Foundation, Filmoteca de Galicia and Numax are participating in this project.

In the field of film, this idea has been developed from either a purely existential perspective or a political stance, something which characterises some of Spain’s principal productions during the Transition era. Agreement between the Provincial Council and the UPV/EHU to turn EQZE into an official university centre

According to the agreement, the UPV/EHU will recognise the current postgraduate degrees as official Master’s degrees. The students are made up of 60% women and 40% men. 10 come from the Basque Autonomous Community, 17 from the rest of Spain and 18 from abroad (11 from Latin America). EQZE will have foreign  students from Andorra, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, United States, Mexico, United Kingdom, Serbia, Thailand, Ukraine and Venezuela. The average age is 29 years old.

Ikusmira Berriak has become a dual-period residency

Residents will develop their projects for four weeks between February and March, during which they will attend workshops for film-makers and directors and will be advised by members of the expert committee. From March to September, the directors will continue working on their project with online tutoring from the experts, and then in September they will return to San Sebastian.
