Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola is located in the Tabakalera building and forms part of the centre’s dynamic cultural and professional ecosystem, something which makes it unique

One of the essential principles behind Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola’s philosophy is an ongoing interaction between technology and thought, creation and reflection, intuition and technical skills, methodical work and inspiration, science and the humanities. On the basis of this idea, the school has been devised, both spatially and conceptually, as a studio or workshop, where students can come to work outside school hours and regulated schedules, availing themselves of the school's technical equipment and laboratories.

In addition to its own space, EQZE is located in the Tabakalera building and, alongside other cultural and film institutions, such as the San Sebastián International Film Festival and the Basque Film Archives, forms part of a dynamic and compact centre dedicated to film in all its complex reality. At EQZE, we refer to the building as the house of cinema, due to the high concentration of film-related resources, outlooks and strategies that are housed under its roof. Among other things, the house of cinema houses the Basque Film Archives conservation rooms, offices and documentation centre, the Medialab creation library, the Tabakalera International Centre for Contemporary Culture’s screening rooms and exhibition halls and the headquarters of the San Sebastián International Film Festival, as well as working spaces for resident artists.

In addition to the general spirit of the building, and thanks to the variety and diversity of the resources contributed by each institution, the house of cinema is also a dynamic space offering many different opportunities for study, research and production.

Due to the nature of these resources, the structure of the house of cinema is as follows:

Laboratories

The EQZE equipment and facilities provide students with access to analogue and digital film tools for both capturing images and sounds and processing, post-production, restoration, preservation and screening. The school has analogue (8 mm, 16mm) and digital cameras; a developing and photochemical material inspection laboratory; a digital image and sound postproduction studio; 8 mm, 16 mm and 35 mm digitisation stations; a magnetic digitisation station; and a screening atelier (8mm, 9.5 mm, 16mm, 35mm and DCP).

Biltegia

Biltegia (equipment room) is the department that keeps and looks after the school’s film, video and sound equipment. Biltegia manages the use of the other EQZE laboratories and equipment. There is a simple reservations protocol for using the school’s equipment and facilities, which are available to all members of the EQZE community, providing their use is linked to their academic activities. Moreover, users must first have completed the specific training course linked to the piece of equipment they wish to use and must comply with all school regulations regarding attendance and basic commitment.

Service and equipment reservation hours are from Tuesday to Thursday from 15:30 to 17:30. Reservations must be made at least two days before the date of use

Laborategia 1 / Laborategia 2

Laborategia 1 and Laborategia 2 (the photochemical laboratories) have all the technical equipment necessary to carry out inspection, recovery, preservation, development (both amateur and professional), correction and editing operations on film material. The technical equipment of this space consists of two Debrie developing trains, a Bell & Howell contact copier (16 mm) and a Filmlab Systems International Colormaster colour analyser for colour matching of positive prints.

Ikuskapena

Ikuskapena (inspection) is the room used for identifying, checking and cleaning photochemical and magnetic material. It is equipped with individual winding tables and instruments for inspection and checking of prints and negatives, splicers, sound synchronisers, small-format moviolas, humidifying chamber and laboratory extractor hood for infected materials.

Digitalizazioa

The digitisation room is equipped with two film digitisation scanners (a 16 mm, 9.5 mm and 8 mm Filmfabriek scanner and a 35 mm and 16 mm Cintel scanner), magnetic format playing devices such as VHS, Betacam, U-matic, DVCam and Hi8, etc., multi-standard equipment (NTSC and PAL) and audio players (CD, DAT, vinyl, cassette).

Lantegia

Multipurpose and adaptive space to carry out manual tasks in any of the three specialties. It can become a small set, a kinescoping room, a projection atelier, an animation studio or a stage for performative work.
