Female Argentinian filmmakers

Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola and the Kontadores Youth Centre are co-organising a film season dedicated to female Argentinian filmmakers. The season will take place in San Sebastián over the course of four Fridays in October and November this year (20 October to 10 November 2023). The season, which is titled ‘Dejemos que la casa se ensucie. Ciclo de Cineastas argentinas’ (Let the house get dirty. Female Argentinian filmmakers), explores the country's contemporary cinema from a feminist and intergenerational perspective, focusing on filmmakers such as María Alché, Melisa Liebenthal and Clarisa Navas, and establishing a dialogue with works by other key female figures in the world of film, such as María Luisa Bemberg, Lucrecia Martel, Albertina Carri and Narcisa Hirsch.

The programme aims to immerse viewers in a diverse selection of films covering several decades from the 1970s onwards, and encompasses works of fiction, non-fiction and experimental cinema. The films selected represent a diverse range of approaches to filmmaking and production, along with a new, rethought outlook on exploring the domestic space and all things intimate and mundane, thereby challenging the predominant narratives of mainstream man-made films.

‘Dejemos que la casa se ensucie’ has been curated by Lucía Dellacha (1994, Buenos Aires), a producer, director, photographer and curator at Cine Las Furias. After studying cinematography at the Film University (Argentina), Dellacha worked on several feature films and TV shows with directors such as Mara Pescio, Fernando Meirelles, Mateo Bendesky and Martín Piroyansky, among others. She is currently studying a Master’s degree in Film Curating at EQZE.

The season has been organised jointly by Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola and the Kontadores Youth Centre, with the collaboration of the Tabakalera International Centre for Contemporary Culture and the Bendita Tú Festival.

Dejemos que la casa se ensucie

The season will begin with Señora de nadie (1982) by María Luisa Bemberg, a film that marks the start of feminist narratives and reflects a certain degree of political concern about the situation of women, particularly in terms of the stereotype of the typical housewife trapped by her responsibilities and the expectations imposed by a patriarchal society. The second session will feature Seguro que Bach cerraba la puerta cuando quería trabajar (1979) by Narcisa Hirsch and Las Lindas (2016) by Melisa Liebenthal. Despite belonging to different periods and having different styles, both of these films are documentary experiments that explore the female perspective, hegemony, beauty, bodies and sexuality from the intimate universe of friendship. The third session will feature Rey muerto (1995) by Lucrecia Martel and Familia Sumergida (2018) by María Alché, both of which deal with the problematic role of ‘mother’, while at the same time taking trips, experiencing grief and exploring dreamlike, suffocating imaginaries. The final session will feature Barbie también puede estar triste (2001) by Albertina Carri and Hoy Partido a las 3 (2017) by Clarisa Navas. These films explore the issues of love and seduction as applied to contemporary women, while at the same time questioning the social pressure imposed in relation to gender and sexual orientation, and struggling to combat homophobia and transphobia.

‘Dejemos que la casa se ensucie. Ciclo de Cineastas Argentinas’ aims to invite viewers to feel closer to the world of film and to activate the Kontadores Youth Centre by participating in screenings, discussions and debates. In addition to the objectives established by the programme itself, the season also aims to call attention to the work carried out by centres such as Kontadores, in an effort to decentralise the events held in a city such as San Sebastián.
