The Age of Innocence (Maximilian Bungarten, 2022, 20 min.)
A young man stands in front of an iron fence holding a sign indicating no trespassing. What lies beyond this threshold, where only a glimpse of an obscured wooded landscape is caught? The Age of Innocence begins with this image, introducing Lev, the young protagonist, and revealing his longing for the unknown. Lev works at a construction site in a provincial city in West Germany. His bright red jumper contrasts with the concrete landscapes of the residential and suburban areas he walks through during his working day: there is a subtle tension between his presence and the world around him. Yet, beyond the city, the forest - whose boundary perhaps is not insurmountable as it seemed – turns into a space of desire and discovery. Maximilian Bungarten’s film talks about the places we inhabit, the urge to escape, and the daring of crossing borders.
Tú me hiciste ver el cielo (Luis Esguerra, 2023, 20 min.)
A group of friends decide to visit a forest - an undetermined place in a suspended time - despite the warnings and restrictions imposed by the presence of a strange moss that has recently invaded the area. The natural world appears transfigured, blended with the fantastic. The young people appropriate the forbidden space, singing, playing, kissing, filming. They form a community, a small family in a world far from the outside world. The forest is transformed, borders and limits disappear and bodies regain their freedom while mingling with each other and with the elements of nature. Luis Esguerra made a film that flows and constantly reinvents itself, like its characters who transcend the boundaries of the human. This film invites us on a journey towards the mythical and the intimate, the uncertain and the proteiform.
A desert island is a programme organised by EQZE's students of Film Curating Studies (2023-2024 Academic Year).
