Historias extraordinarias

The mysteries of the province of Buenos Aires: the Pampas, the river, roadside hotels. The adventures of three loners –X, Z and H–whose paths never cross. One shot. Another. A full-on shoot out. A possessed architect. A bet, a treasure.

'Our aim, our highly ambitious aim, was to experiment with the old forgotten gods of adventure and intrigue, and, in some way, to bring them back to life. Is it still possible, in this modern age, to dig up a great fictional story without falling into the trap of nostalgia and anachronism? Without enacting a sad and demonic masquerade ball? This question (which I still do not feel capable of answering) is what gives life to the film. (...) To my mind, these stories are governed by two impulses: the happiness generated by travelling, and the happiness generated by the act of retelling.'

Mariano Llinás (Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1975) is a director and scriptwriter and a member of the El Pampero Cine filmmaker group, alongside Laura Citarella, Alejo Moguillansky and Agustín Mendilaharzu. In 2002, he completed his first feature film, entitled Balnearios. In 2008, he shot his second film, Historias Extraordinarias, which has been widely acclaimed by critics and garnered much success and popularity in Argentina. His latest feature film, La Flor (2018), premièred at the last Bafici festival, where it won first prize. It later competed at other renowned international festivals such as Locarno, Toronto, New York and the Vienna International Film Festival (Viennale), being extremely well-received by both audiences and specialist critics alike.
