A filmmaker and teacher, Marianela Vega has a Bachelor's degree in Audiovisual Communication from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (2003) and a Master's in Fine Arts with a mention in Film Direction from the University of Texas in Austin (2009). She has made 7 short films which have been screened at international festivals and galleries. Her work is characterised by taking an intimate look at issues such as family, identity and bonds. Her first feature film, 'Rodar contra Todo' (2016), won the Peruvian Ministry of Culture Awards for Post Production and Distribution. She is currently making her second feature film, 'El Maldito Bastardo', in which she once again adopts an autobiographical approach to explore the emotional heritage of her family and her attachment to her father, based on home movies recorded by him at the beginning of the 1990s. The film was awarded a Documentary Feature Development and Production grant by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture. As a teacher, she has run courses on film production at two universities in Lima and since 2014 has run film workshops at Youth Rehabilitation Centres for minors in conflict with the law. In 2018 and 2019 she was a member of the Selection Committee at the Lima Film Festival.
