For Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, research is part of our DNA and a natural way of relating to film.
EQZE sees itself as the result of a research and innovation process orientated towards the world of film that is conceptually manifested in the form of a living film school. Far from being a closed organisation, the school is an open, permeable project, an object of ongoing study, experimentation and self-definition. In this sense, research is a key part of our identity. It is from this seed that all the research resources deployed by the school stem (seminars, research projects and actions, publications, the Z-A project, etc.); it is this seed that nurtures all its educational, academic, intellectual and creative activities and impregnates all its strategic actions.
Research is the backbone of EQZE community of researchers and learners and fosters the establishment of an interdisciplinary network of connections between academic and professional stakeholders. The coherence of the Tabakalera inter-institutional ecosystem is a result of the heterogeneity and complementarity of its stakeholders, since each institution has experience in different and complementary fields of film. Research and learning are EQZE’s two key areas of expertise and knowledge.
In this sense, EQZE aims to be a driver for innovation within the Basque Film Archive, the Tabakalera International Centre for Contemporary Culture and the San Sebastián International Film Festival. For these institutions, Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola is a school and a space for reflection; at the end of the day, it is a school for the school itself, in the sense that it constantly questions film education.
A film research centre
The research activity at the centre is structured around four lines of research:
- Teaching and learning about cinema.
- Theoretical approaches to innovative techniques in archiving, curating and filmmaking.
- The interconnection of cinema with other scientific, humanistic and aesthetic disciplines.
- New perspectives on Basque cinema.
Work on these four lines is carried out through interdisciplinary, cooperative and open research projects. These are interdisciplinary projects because they will have the active participation of EQZE students and will be enriched by the contributions of the teachers from the three curricular programmes of the school, thus developing methodologies based on exchange and learning between disciplines and knowledge. They are cooperative projects, as they are conceived in close collaboration with local and international film and academic institutions. And they are open projects because both the results and the questions they generate will be socialised through different media, formats and languages that will include creative pieces, specialist and informative publications, public programmes, online content and exhibition projects.
Research projects are rooted in a series of hypotheses and medium and long-term aims and are based on theoretical and applied research methods. Their main aim is to generate relevant, original contributions to the study and conservation of film culture and heritage.
