11/08/2024Ave by Ana Cristina Barragán, Una sombra oscilante by Celeste Rojas Mugica and El tercer paisaje by Julen Etxebarria will compete at the International Festival of Documentary and Short Film of Bilbao, ZINEBI (November 8-15). Four projects currently under development will participate in the industry section of the festival. On the 12th, the initial results of EQZE's research project, “ZINEBI Collection”, which explores the festival's film archive, will be presented.
EQZE researches ZINEBI's film collection
10/29/2024The Festival preserves more than 300 films shot on 16 and 35 mm, along with other materials, in the Filmoteca Vasca archives. In 2022, Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola began a research project to carry out a critical reflection on the Festival, to catalogue and preserve the collection, and to design a socialisation plan and provide access to the materials. The project will be presented at Bilbao AS Fabrik on November 12 as part of the ZINEBI Professional Forum.

10/16/2024Vino la noche (Paolo Tizón), Muyurina – Itzuli Mitzuli Diana Castro) and Pirópolis (Nicolás Molina) participate in Doclisboa. The projects “Buti” (Marc Torres) and “Las palabras” (Paolo Tizón) will take part in the sixth edition of the festival's RAW residency program. 09/17/2024The online platform “Flores en la sombra” of Filmoteca Española has exhibited the film Biarritz y sus alrededores (1922), digitized as part of the research project “Kinetic Pieces and Scopic Avant-gardes” of EQZE and Gordailua, Centro de Colecciones Patrimoniales de Gipuzkoa. The work has been made from a 35 mm copy owned by the Filmoteca de Andalucía.

EQZE participates in the Eye Film Institute's annual conference
05/28/2024Luiza Gonçalves and Lucas Larriera, students of the third promotion of EQZE, present at the Eye International Conference the ARTELEKU-NOGUI project that revolves around the audiovisual archive of the now defunct art center in Guipuzcoa. In 2019, EQZE activated "Generation Losses", a research project around Arteleku's video collection together with the Akmeka group of the UPV/EHU with the aim of proposing a model for the study, conservation and exhibition of those materials. The second issue of ZINE: Film Research Series dedicated a dossier to this project.

Rick Prelinger to give a workshop at EQZE
02/16/2024Using local film archives provided by the Basque Cinemateque, the participants will make an archival film in the project “Gipuzkoa perdida y encontrada” ("Gipuzkoa Lost and Found"). This activity is part of the "Filmmakers Dialogues" program organized by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa. Rick Prelinger began his career collecting films of an advertising, industrial or educational nature in 1983. In 2000 he created, in partnership with the Internet Archive, a collection entitled the Prelinger Archives (now over 7,800 films), available for free online downloading and reuse. His collection of over 60,000 films was acquired in 2002 by the Library of Congress. He is the author of the films Panorama Ephemera (2004), No More Road Trips? (2013), All-Is-Well (2016) and Useful Prophecies (2019).
Fran Bouzas' "Hidden City" premieres at Berlin Critics' Week

For the first time in the history of Ikusmira Berriak, two projects by Basque women filmmakers have been selected. The residency period will last eight weeks divided into two stays.

09/18/2023EQZE has opened its doors to the sixth intake year. The 2023-2024 academic year starts today and will conclude in December 2024, with the presentation of the assignments carried out at the school. The 46 students accepted onto the course were selected by the school’s Academic Management Team from among the 215 applications received from thirty different countries during the admissions period. 16 students will be receiving study scholarships, thanks to the grants awarded by Ibermedia, the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council’s Culture Department and the Paradiso Project

07/04/2023Die donau (Jaume Claret) and Tú me hiciste ver el cielo (Luis Esguerra) are part of the Compétition Flash, and Wild Flowers (Karla Crnčević) is part of the Autres Joyaux section. FIDMarseille will also screen Vitanuova, by Chilean filmmaker Niles Atallah. Developed in EQZE's photochemical laboratory with the participation of EQZE students, the film will also be screened as part of the Compétition Flash.

06/20/2023A committee made up of members of Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola and the San Sebastian Festival made their decision last month on the three research grants promoted by the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council’s Department of Culture. The proposals chosen by the committee were those of Felipe Cabrerizo, Endika Rey and EQZE alumni Neus Sabaté “for the appropriate nature of their topic and methodology, their contribution at theoretical level to knowledge of national and international cinematography, and their use of the Festival archive as their primary resource”.
Four Cuban films digitised in EQZE to be screened at Archival Assembly #2
06/14/2023Today at Arsenal - Institut für Film und Videokunst e.V. in Berlin, four Cuban films digitised in the framework of the research project "Second Hand. Reuse and Deviations in Ibero-American Cinema" of EQZE. These short films (El negro by Eduardo Manet (1960), L.B.J. by Santiago Álvarez (1968), 79 primaveras by Santiago Álvarez (1969) and Oración by Marisol Trujillo, Miriam Talavera and Pepín Rodríguez (1984)) come from the holdings of Cinemateca de Cuba and are part of a wider ongoing research on the production of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry ICAIC. This screening is part of the activities of the festival Archival Assembly #2.

World premiere of "Vitanuova" at FICUNAM
06/02/2023The latest work by Chilean filmmaker Niles Atallah is part of the Umbrales section, dedicated to experimental film. Vitanuova was developed in EQZE's photochemical laboratory under the coordination of Asier Armental, with the collaboration in the development and digitalisation of Celeste Rojas Múgica and Laura Óliver, students of Filmmaking and Film Preservation Studies from the fifth income of the centre. FICUNAM will also screen the films of two other students: Canto Errante by Génesis Valenzuela and While the Vines Weep by Laura Moreno Bueno.

Presentation of the third issue of the ZINE magazine
10/21/2022This Saturday will take place the public presentation of the third issue of the ZINE magazine published by Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Filmoteca Vasca and the San Sebastian Festival. The presentation will be attended by Beñat Sarasola, researcher, and Maialen Beloki, deputy director of SSIFF, authors of the main texts of the magazine dedicated, in this case, to the film work of Koldo Izagirre and the biofilmography of Antxon Eceiza. The presentation will be followed by a screening of Ke arteko egunak by Antxon Eceiza.
Before that, at 18:00, Maialen Beloki will present his publication "Antxon Eceiza. Vidas, tiempos, obras", published by the Shangrila association, accompanied by Santos Zunzunegui.

Curtocircuíto will also dedicate a session to the new restoration of the film work of Eugenio Granell (1912-2001). The restoration has been carried out at EQZE by a group of students made up of Borja Rodríguez, Amaia Badiola, Julia Cortegana de la Fuente and Pablo Adiego led by Carolina Cappa. 07/12/2022Disillusionment is a recurring concept in the Spanish cultural context. In the field of film, this idea has been developed from either a purely existential perspective or a political stance, something which characterises some of Spain’s principal productions during the Transition era. Although the discourse was different, as indeed was the political process, this disillusionment and ideological crisis also spread to the Basque cultural scene, giving rise to the creation of different works that, often in the midst of fierce controversies, generated a unique context.

01/31/2020The admissions period for the 2020-2021 academic year at Elías Querejeta Film School (EQZE) will open on 1 February and conclude on 15 May. EQZE will carry out an initial selection from among those candidates who apply during the first half of the period. The 2020-2021 academic year at EQZE will begin on 14 September.

11/25/2019The founder of the distribution company Ciné-Femmes International, Vivian Ostrovsky, will recall the cycle of films made by women which ran in 1978. There will be a screening of ‘Expediente’, directed by Carlos Rodríguez Sanz and Manuel Coronado, Golden Shell for best short film in 1977, and a performative intervention by Luis López Carrasco and Raúl Liarte.

Agreement between the Provincial Council and the UPV/EHU to turn EQZE into an official university centre
02/01/2019According to the agreement, the UPV/EHU will recognise the current postgraduate degrees as official Master’s degrees. While working in collaboration with the UPV/EHU, the school will retain complete autonomy, with its current pedagogic project unchanged. The period for applying for a place on the courses starts this Friday, 1 February, and ends 31 May.
Students at the EQZE to help plan the films to be screen in Tabakalera
01/23/2019'Eskolatik' is a twofold initiative, since it is both a window onto the Elías Querejeta Film School (EQZE) and a programme that emerges from that very school. Once a month throughout the academic year, students at the EQZE will programme a session at the Tabakalera cinema, during which they will screen films linked to their syllabus, their work as filmmakers and their concerns and interests regarding the art of filmmaking.

EQZE students will curate “Other Lights” exhibition
10/23/2018Students at the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola Film School will put together the programme for the new video art exhibition which will be held this Christmas in the streets of Pamplona’s Historic Quarter. The Pamplona City Council has signed a collaboration agreement with the school to support the initiative, which will take place from 21 December to 1 January in various areas of the city centre.
EQZE promotes its research output
09/04/2018New approaches to feminist cinema, the conservation of film archives and Basque cinema are added to the research projects devoted to Andrei Tarkovsky and the San Sebastian Film Festival. A collection of digital publications will take a fresh look at Basque cinema and audiovisuals. The fourth edition of Ikusmira Berriak has started
08/24/2018This fourth annual edition will be the last one under Ikusmira Berriak's current structure. The next edition will be divided into two stays: one in February and one in September. The call for the fifth edition, which will be held in accordance with the new model, will close on the 31st. In October, the five selected projects will be unveiled.

07/09/2018The students are made up of 60% women and 40% men. 10 come from the Basque Autonomous Community, 17 from the rest of Spain and 18 from abroad (11 from Latin America). EQZE will have foreign students from Andorra, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, United States, Mexico, United Kingdom, Serbia, Thailand, Ukraine and Venezuela. The average age is 29 years old.
Ikusmira Berriak has become a dual-period residency
07/06/2018Residents will develop their projects for four weeks between February and March, during which they will attend workshops for film-makers and directors and will be advised by members of the expert committee. From March to September, the directors will continue working on their project with online tutoring from the experts, and then in September they will return to San Sebastian.

Tarkovski's examination of other directors' cinema under study
05/04/2018The assistants will hear observations about Bergman, Bresson, Iosseliani, Kozintsev, the Lumière brothers, Parajanov and others. Amongst all of them, particular attention will be paid to Tarkovski's observations about Luis Buñuel's cinema. Julen Abasolo, Cristina Álvarez, Pilar Carrera, Xabier Erkizia, Till Fellner, Giuseppe Lanci, Adrian Martin and José Manuel Mouriño will take part in this event.
“Zinemaldia 70. All Possible Histories”

All Possible Histories, with a view to generating a living Festival archive. EQZE is opening the admission period on the 8th of January
01/05/2018On the 8th of January Elías Querejeta Zine-Eskola will be opening the registration period in its three courses (Film Preservation, Curating and Filmmaking), a period that will remain open until the 31st of May. The places available are restricted to 15 students per speciality and the registration fee is 3,500 Euros. The academic year will start at the same time as the 66th San Sebastián Film Festival.

09/15/2017The Doré Cinema (Spanish Film Archive) in Madrid was the venue this morning for the presentation of the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (EQZE) film school. The school has been set up and funded by the Culture Department of the Provincial Government of Gipuzkoa. It will act as an international centre for film research, educational innovation and experimentation.

Carlos Muguiro will be the director of the new Cinema School
04/26/2017Carlos Muguiro will be the director of the new Film School to be created in Tabakalera, which has been promoted by the Provincial Government. The jury has agreed to declare as winner of the contest the project "The hypothesis of cinema", which will be managed by Muguiro. Four proposals took part in the contest called by the Provincial Government.
The Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa presents the new Film School
02/20/2017The Chief of Staff of the Deputy General’s Office and Regional Minister for Culture, Denis Itxaso, has unveiled the details of the new film school to be created at Tabakalera. To this end, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and Tabakalera have signed a collaboration agreement to enable a space on the ground floor to develop its film school project there.
