Ikusmira Berriak and Noka Mentoring, two development program

Ikusmira Berriak is a programme of residencies for developing specific projects that aims to foster and encourage talent and audiovisual creation.

Through residencies, it offers participants the place, context, time and resources they need, and is based on two main focuses of interest: training and development.

Ikusmira Berriak is a programme of residencies for filmmakers to support and promote up-and-coming talent and audiovisual creation. The residency offers space, time, context and resources for developing filmmaking projects. The programme was born in 2015 from the collaboration between the San Sebastian Festival and Tabakalera and, since 2018, also has the participation of the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (EQZE).

The call for grant applications is divided into five categories:

  1. Basque Country category
  2. Spain category
  3. International category
  4. EQZE category (students from the last three promotions)
  5. Nest category (participants from the last five years)

The Ikusmira Berriak project is born and takes its inspiration from this shared strategic vision in the shape of an 8-week residency divided into two periods around a programme of support running for seven months from March to September. During the first phase, the residents develop their projects over a period of six weeks (between March and April), also receiving advice from members of the committee of experts, who tutor the projects and work on the different stages of the development process according to their needs. In September, coinciding with the San Sebastian Festival, they return to complete the last two weeks of the residency, a time when they work on and foster potential collaborations with professionals interested in participating in their projects. Between the two phases of the residency, both the tutors and the institutions provide the projects with advice and support.

The institutions involved in the programme have articulated a system of providing backing to cinematic talent which is not limited to helping a project to see the light and become visible; its aim is to accompany and support talent over time.

These are the EQZE students who have participated in Ikusmira Berriak since 2020, the first edition to present work developed at the centre:

- 2020: Gabriel Azorín (EQZE)

- 2021: Marina Palacio (CAV) and Magdalena Orellana (EQZE)

- 2022: Jaume Claret (Nest) and Ana Cristina Barragán (EQZE)

NOKA Mentoring

Noka Mentoring is a Basque Government programme coordinated by Tabakalera’s film department in collaboration with Zineuskadi. It provides supervision, guidance and support for feature film projects from emerging female directors in the Basque Country and Navarre.

Noka Mentoring provides the participating female directors with time, space, context and professional support during the initial phase of their films. They also receive help to prepare a directorial dossier which is as robust as possible, enabling them to access other film-related support from the Basque Government, the ICAA (Film and Audiovisual Institute of the Ministry for Culture) and professional forums in the international film industry.

In order for the three selected directors to become involved in the program offered by Noka Mentoring and develop their projects in the best possible conditions, each of them will receive a financial aid of 4,000€.

These are the students from EQZE who have participated in Noka Mentoring since the start of the programme in 2020:

- 2020: Marina Palacio

- 2021: Clara Rus

- 2022: Maria Inês Gonçalves and Andrea Sánchez

- 2023: Mikele Landa
