Nightcleaners (Berwick Street Collective, 1975)
At night, while the city sleeps, a group of women cleans offices in London. Nightcleaners addresses the working conditions of cleaners and the organizing efforts they drove forward in the United Kingdom in the 1970s. In a fragmented form, the film follows this process by giving space to different voices and situations, drawing close to a largely invisible reality: the long working hours, the encounters, and the difficulties that defined their struggle.
Active between 1970 and the mid-1980s, the Berwick Street Film Collective developed a body of work that contributed to what became known as the avant-garde of British documentary cinema in the 1970s. Their work documented the political and social tensions of the era, depicting confrontations among trade unions, various working-class communities, and the government.
AZTARNAK is a program organized by the Film Curating Studies students of the 2025-2026 Academic Year at EQZE.
