Blissfully Yours (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2002, 125 min.)
Young Min is suffering from a rash that has appeared on his skin, but he doesn't say a word in the doctor's office, he just inhales and exhales; to act otherwise would be to betray himself, to reveal that he doesn't speak Thai, that he is an illegal immigrant. He is accompanied by his girlfriend, Roong, and an older woman, Orn. The film begins there, in the hospital, but then starts anew, on the highway, when the couple goes on a picnic. It is a car journey, a journey without words, a break in the middle of the film and a break from everyday life. From that moment on, another space and time opens up. Entering the forest introduces one to a mesmerizing and sensual world. Here, one contemplates love and desire, surrendering to an environment that unveils a richer emotional tapestry with each passing moment. Welcome to another reality. Blissfully Yours is Apichatpong Weerasethakul's second feature film, and cements his reputation as one of the most singular directors of contemporary cinema.
* Screening in 35 mm.
