Elías Querejeta Zine eskola to participate in the annual FIAF conference
The International Federation of Film Archive yearly meeting, which is held in Montreal, will explore the role of film archives in creative contexts. EQZE will present a paper on the work carried out within the framework of the project ‘Second Hand’, dedicated to researching and recovering films that reuse materials made by others.

At the end of April, the International Federation of Film Archives will hold its annual symposium in Montreal under the title ‘Film Archives Beget Films’. The meeting aims to explore the use of film archives to create new works by analyzing the factors that have historically characterized such practices, such as the social and geopolitical context in which they emerge, the material nature of the images, and the confluence (within this environment) of conservation, restitution, and filmmaking.
Carolina Cappa, coordinator of the school’s Research Department, will present a paper entitled 'A Genealogy and Preservation of Second-Hand Films in Latin America’ based on the experience accumulated during the project ‘Second Hand. Reuse and deviations of Ibero-American cinema’, carried out at EQZE. This initiative, which began in 2021, aims to foster research into and the recovery of films made in the Ibero-American context that reuse material produced by others and enhance their accessibility and circulation.
During the various stages of the project, in which several different institutions have participated, including Filmoteca Española, Cinemateca de Cuba and the Arsenal Institute for Film and Video Art, researchers at EQZE have recovered several works created in particular political contexts, including El negro (Eduardo Manet, Cuba, 1960), La Paz (Grupo Cine Liberación/María Elena Massolo, Argentina, 1968) and Made in USA (Christine and Kurt Rosenthal, Peru, 1974). The recovery of these works and the experience of their directors have enabled new interpretations of the history of cinema.
The FIAF symposium, organised in conjunction with the Cinémathèque Québécoise, will take place on 28 and 29 April and will be attended by professionals from film archives, universities, and institutions worldwide.
