Barbie también puede estar triste (Albertina Carri, 2001, 22 min.)

Taking elements that parody porn films and melodrama, and using dolls that represented the very height of what it meant to be a ‘good woman’ for the stop-motion work, Carri creates a scathing criticism of the violence inherent to the norms, order and traditions in which the Family is rooted in order to ensure that the orders of society are obeyed, exposing and punishing all those who are judged to be a-normal. In a twist that she goes back to once again in Las Hijas del Fuego, the monster that Albertina portrays is precisely the figure that, in theory, embodies success: the white heterosexual male, soaked in success, who humiliates, hits and violates.  As a counterpart, community, tenderness and family (this time with a small f) gather the strength of all ‘the losers’ and, in a festive atmosphere, do away with hierarchies and class and gender divisions.
