In the opinion of Harkaitz Millán, Councillor for Culture at the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, the founder of the school and the institution responsible for its financing, 'for the Department of Culture it is wonderful to see how one of the students at Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola has managed to make their mark at an event such as the San Sebastián Film Festival. This shows that the work started with the foundation of the school is providing opportunities for our young filmmakers.'
The Director of EQZE, Carlos Muguiro, also underscored the importance of this achievement, due to both the effect it will have on the young local filmmaker's career and the fact that it confirms the effectiveness of the school, which is still a very young project. He also pointed out that Palacio's achievement will serve to spur on her colleagues and other members of the school community currently involved in different projects. Both this success and those achieved by other students in the form of grants for projects, scholarships and professional internships at some of the world's most important cultural and film institutions, are a testament to the school's increasing impact and possibilities for growth.
Ya no duermo
The short film, made during Palacio's time on the Filmmaking Studies course of the postgraduate degree run by EQZE, tells the story of the very special relationship established between 12-year-old Miguel (Miguel Burgueño) and his 60-year-old Uncle Kechus (Jesús Palacio) as they fantasise about the universe of the vampires while attempting to make a film together.
Marina Palaciok Arte Ederretako gradua egin zuen Madrilgo Complutense Unibertsitatean, 2018-2019 ikasturtean EQZEn aritu baino lehen. Hain zuzen, ikasturte hori izan zen eskolako lehena. Hainbat diziplina artistikotan dihardu, bereziki zineman eta argazkigintzan. Gaur egun, bere lehenengo film luzea idazten ari da, Eusko Jaurlaritzaren Noka Mentoring programaren babesean.
Produced by Gariza Films and the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, 'Ya no duermo' is the second film by one of the school's students to be screened at the SSIFF. Last year, 'La enorme presencia de los muertos’ by José María Avilés, also from the first intake group, was included in the Nest Film Students section. 'Ya no duermo' was also recently selected for inclusion in the 2020 short film catalogue of the Kimuak programme run by the Basque Government.
