"One of the best qualities of EQZE lies in its commitment to interdisciplinary dynamics and the convergence of perspectives"
Camila Aboitiz, Marga Almirall, and Luiza Rosado, students of the Master's in Film Preservation Studies from the 2023-2024 class, share their experience at Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola.

1. Can you describe your Master’s graduation project?
2. How would you describe your experience at the school?
3. Who would you recommend Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola to?
CAMILA ABOITIZ
1. ‘Estrategias para detener el paso del tiempo’ is a plan for managing my collection of family archives. These archives are unique in that they contain all sorts of materials from all places, from historically relevant images to scientific files. The project explores how to organise these materials within a single collection, considering domestic archives as containers of our collective memory.
2. My experience at EQZE was very enriching. The Master’s degree in Film Preservation Studies provided me with in-depth technical knowledge I had always found lacking in my previous academic training. However, this technical knowledge is firmly anchored in reflective issues. Undoubtedly, one of the key characteristics of the school and its program is its ability to combine technique with poetic experience.
3. I recommend EQZE to anyone interested in expanding their understanding of film beyond any single discipline. One of the school’s best qualities is its approach, which challenges the logic of specialisation that so many academic institutions adopt, promoting instead interdisciplinary dynamics and the convergence of perspectives from different professions and contexts. Coming to EQZE is a good opportunity to fall in love with film all over again and see it from a new perspective.
MARGA ALMIRALL
1. My Master’s graduation project in a speculation about a film that is considered lost. The film is Thaïs, directed by Elena Jordi in 1918. It was the first film directed by a woman in Spain, but sadly it did not survive. During my project, I researched Jordi and created a cinematographic speculation about what the film might have been like.
2. My time at EQZE was incredibly stimulating. I completed a postgraduate degree in Film Preservation Studies, during which I gained knowledge and experience completely different from what I had acquired previously during my studies and work. My time at EQZE has enabled me to achieve depth, and this has helped me develop a firmer idea of who I am, professionally and personally.
3. I recommend EQZE to all who are already fairly advanced in their professional trajectory and want to go one step further to delve deeper into their profession. I recommend it to those who want to take some time to learn about and reflect on their practice. EQZE is like an oasis for thinking, a space to reflect on film from multiple perspectives, and a unique opportunity in today’s chaotic world.
LUIZA ROSADO
1. For my Master’s graduation project, I researched and digitised a 16mm copy of the film O Pequeno Exército Louco by the Brazilian director Lúcia Murat. It is a film about the Nicaraguan Sandinista Revolution. At EQZE, I could inspect and digitize the film, carry out the post-production, and propose a preservation plan.
2. My experience at EQZE was enriching, both personally and professionally. It provided me with highly diverse theoretical and technical training, with many different teachers from different areas. Most notably, it was an excellent opportunity to work with fellow students from other Master’s degrees, enabling us to pool our knowledge when engaging in different projects. The cultural exchanges that took place also taught me a lot.
3. I would recommend EQZE to anyone eager to meet different professionals, not just from the film world but also from diverse areas of culture, to exchange knowledge. The school is open to proposals that refuse to recognise borders and helps you prepare the earth where you will plant your creative seed.
Application period
The enrollment period for the 2025-2026 course at Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola began on February 1st and ends on the 28th. Enrollment can only be processed through the form available on this website.
The postgraduate in Film Preservation Studies forces students to confront the (theoretical, technical and ethical) dilemmas generated by film as part of our tangible and intangible heritage. In addition to addressing all aspects linked to identifying images and sounds in photochemical, magnetic and digital format, the course also deals with the tools required for managing existing collections and creating new ones.
It introduces students to audiovisual material review, preservation and restoration protocols and procedures, through both mechanical and digital tools, enabling them to gain real practical experience in the lab.
The Film Preservation Studies course is in constant dialogue with the work carried out by the Basque Film Archive, which enables students to experience first-hand what it is like to work in an FIAF-approved film archive.
