Señora de nadie (María Luisa Bemberg, 1982, 98 min.)
When Leonor, a committed housewife with two children, discovers that her husband is cheating on her, her world collapses. Full of fear, she leaves her home and leaves her children in her husband’s care. She takes refuge in her Aunt Lola’s house, which is actually an old people’s home, trusting that Fernando will not be able to find her there. She spies on her children as they come and go from her old home, making sure they never see how devastated she is. Thanks to a friend who puts in a good word for her, she starts working in an estate agent’s and starts to earn her own money for the first time in her life. She meets Pablo, a young homosexual who is in a bad place in his life, and they become friends. Little by little, Leonor reconciles with her children, whom she sees every day, and begins the process of discovering who she really is.
Biography
María Luisa Bemberg (1922, Buenos Aires). Bemberg began making films at the age of 58, striving in her work to explore the role of women in society. Always firmly committed to the universe of women, she deals with issues such as desire and adultery, among other questions that were rarely explored in the conversations of that era. She also worked as a scriptwriter and producer and founded the Argentinian Feminist Union (AFU). Her film Camila was short-listed for the Oscars in the best foreign film category.
