The future was desert
Aztarnak proposes cinema as a space for exploration, a way of imagining possible futures through traces and signals that pulse through our present. This year's program, comprising 10 sessions, begins on February 15.
The EQZE cinema, located on the ground floor of the Tabakalera building, will be the setting for Aztarnak, the film cycle organized by the students of the eighth Curating class of Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola. This year's program, comprising 10 sessions, begins on February 15 and continues on March 15 and April 19. The dates for the rest of the cycle will be announced soon. Access is free and open until full capacity is reached.
Aztarnak, the name of the cycle, refers to the exploration of traces and signals to imagine futures. Through the films, the students seek questions and possible answers that allow for the imagination of other horizons: multiple, expansive, fragmentary. The program is articulated into three blocks, conceived as an atlas of images and experiences, in which cinema serves as a tool for reflecting on the present. From fiction to documentary, the programming brings together works that expand and problematize the meaning of cinema, and that dialogue with issues linked to technological transformations, the environments we inhabit, and the forms—real or imagined—of projecting the future.
The program also proposes generating an active dialogue with the viewers. This will manifest as a space for creation and collaboration in the room adjacent to the cinema, which will open 1 hour after each projection. There, viewers will be able to contribute to the construction of a collective atlas of images from physical materials, creating an archive of possible future imaginaries based on the films. These activities will be accompanied by the students.
These two lines of work express the desire to reflect on and enjoy cinema in community, seeking to jointly explore the unknowns of the present.
Program
The first block of Aztarnak is woven around territory. Films that inhabit dissident or unusual spaces, corners and dead ends, that ask how we live in what remains, who owns the land we walk on, and how to rebuild ourselves within spaces that seem sealed off. Images that invite us to move beyond dichotomies and to see territories as thresholds: places from which we can imagine habitable futures using the materialities that already exist.
