Based on fragments from her book, "Siete pasos más tarde" (Seven steps later), in these talks Menchu Gutiérrez explores some of the ways in which poetry has dealt with the calculation of time: from heartbeats to bell peals and from cock crows to the melting wax on a candle. This accomplished writer pauses at the thresholds of time and wanders round its cloisters, dwelling on experiences far removed from official clocks to offer a poetic inventory of times grown inside and outside of time itself.

Menchu Gutiérrez (Madrid, 1957) has published several books of poetry, including "El ojo de Newton" (Pre-textos, 2005) and "Lo extraño, la raíz" (Vaso Roto, 2015). She is also the author of an extensive body of prose work, all published by Siruela. Titles include "Viaje de Estudios" (1995), "La tabla de las mareas" (1998), "La mujer ensimismada" (2001), "Latente" (2003), "Disección de una tormenta" (2005), "Detrás de la boca" (2007), "El faro por dentro" (2011), "La niebla, tres veces" (2011), a small collection of her early novels, published by the same publishing house, and "Araña, cisne, caballo" (2014). Her work also includes an essay on snow in literature, "Decir la nieve" (Siruela, 2011), a poetic work on the measurement of time, "Siete pasos más tarde" (Siruela, 2017) and a literary biography on San Juan de la Cruz (Omega, 2004). She has also translated works by authors such as E.A. Poe, J. Austen, A. Brontë, J. Brodsky and W.H. Auden. In addition to writing for the cultural supplement of the newspaper El País, as well as for several literary journals, she has also organised a number of multidisciplinary seminars in centres such as La Casa Encendida and La casa del Lector in Madrid, the Botín Foundation in Santander and Arteleku in San Sebastián, and has run seminars and workshops at universities such as the International Menéndez Pelayo University in Santander, the Complutense University in Madrid and the UNAM in Mexico City.
