Genealogies of Learning

Film Education, Pedagogies, and Methodologies

This is a research project focused on the study of film and video pedagogies and methodologies developed under the umbrella of the larger and ongoing project Z-A (Filmmaker’s Archive1). The aim is to identify, study and discuss a global and transnational history of film pedagogies and teaching / learning processes. We wish to open a discussion about past and present approaches to pedagogy, with a greater focus on radical and experimental practices, within and beyond an institutional setting. This will be an opportunity to read, discuss and organise seminars to discuss this issue of film pedagogies and how this history can inform the way we think about film education and its potential.

In practical terms we want to look for primary documents such as memos, course syllabi, lectures, class exercises, personal notes, and other teaching materials, including audio-visual recordings, that relate to the transmission of film knowledge and practice. The research can draw on the collections of filmmakers but also on institutions, collectives and communities, workshops, movements, schools, and any other project that relates to the subject of film education. We wish to consider past and present pedagogical strategies not merely as complementary practices, but as sometimes radical alternatives that contribute to create new spaces and modes of thinking and doing.

Some research topics: Genealogies of learning, educational imaginaries, Transnational cinemas, nomadic schools, Filmology (history and development), Feminist Film histories and teaching, Community video and cinema practices, Militant Cinema and pedagogy, Third Cinema and radical education, Film and knowledge production, the “illustrated lecture”, film teaching in art institutions, historical alternatives to the traditional university and college system, pedagogy as experimental research, learning spaces, film as an educational tool, modernity and pedagogy, de-schooling, Oppositional Cinema and the role of pedagogy, educational reform, Pedagogical innovation and film, “Education Images”/Images of Education, film pedagogical strategies developed during revolutionary contexts, etc.
