The festival will host the world premiere of La cumbre, a short film by Ander Reviejo. Also participating in the festival will be La nostra habitació (Jaume Claret Muxart), A solidão dos lagartos (Inês Nunes), Bologna, 24 de junio (Borja Rodríguez), and O costume do traballo (Luis Morla).

The films by Ana Cristina Barragán, recently awarded at the Venice Mostra, and Paula Tomás Marques have both received special mentions in the Horizontes Latinos and Zabaltegi-Tabakalera sections, respectively.

Hiedra (Ana Cristina Barragán), winner of the award for best screenplay in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival, will be screened in the Horizontes Latinos section. Estrany riu (Jaume Claret Muxart) and Duas vezes João Liberada (Paula Tomás Marques) will feature in Zabaltegi-Tabakalera. A new version of En el balcón vacío (Jomí García Ascot, 1961), restored at the EQZE, will be screened in Klasikoak. A solidão dos lagartos (Inês Nunes) will compete in Nest.

The 2025-2026 Academic Year starts today and will conclude in fifteen months' time, in December 2026, with the presentation of students’ graduation assignments. This year’s students come from 12 different countries.

Ana Cristina Barragán’s film, created during her time as a student in the 2020–2021 class of Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, has been awarded Best Screenplay in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival. Hiedra took part in the Ikusmira Berriak program in 2022, organized by SSIFF, CICC Tabakalera, and EQZE. The film will be screened in the Horizontes Latinos section of the 73rd San Sebastián Film Festival.

Filmed in Mexico and based on the memories of Navarra-born María Luisa Elío, the film is a significant work within the exile cinema movement. The Government of Navarra supports the project in collaboration with the UNAM Film Archive. The film will be screened at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, within the Klasikoak section.

The Giornate degli Autori and the Settimana Internazionale della Critica, two parallel sections of the Venice International Film Festival, will host the world premiere of Anoche conquisté Tebas and La moto, both productions developed at Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola.

Estrany riu (Strange River) by Jaume Claret Muxart and Hiedra by Ana Cristina Barragán will compete in the Orizzonti Section. Over the past year, a significant number of films developed at Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola have achieved remarkable international projection.

Sofía Petersen's debut feature film, a Filmmaking Studies student from the second graduating class of Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, has been selected to compete in the Concorso Cineasti del Presente section of the Locarno Film Festival. Olivia and the fourteen other films participating in this category, dedicated to first and second works, are vying for the Pardo d'Oro, the second most important award granted by the prestigious festival. The 78th edition of the Festival will take place between August 6 and 16.

Rita Azevedo Gomes’ new film will première within the framework of this year’s International FIDMarseille (8-13 July). Fuck the Polis emerged from the project A céu aberto, which Azevedo Gomes (Lisbon, 1952) shared and developed with students on the Filmmaking Studies course at EQZE during her residency at the school during the 2023-2024 academic year. Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola is one of the film’s associate producers. Furthermore, FIDlab, the French festival’s project laboratory, will feature The Mirage by Bingham Bryant, a Filmmaking Studies student from the 2023-2024 intake year. The film is currently in postproduction.

Paula Tomás Marques's debut feature film has been chosen for the Horizons section of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The film, created by an EQZE student, premiered at the Berlinale, Berlin International Film Festival and recently received the Special Jury Prize at the Taipei Film Festival.

Adrià Expòsit Goy's Pneuma and Luis Morla's La costumbre del trabajo are participating in the festival's Cosmos and Supernova sections.

Filmed in Mexico based on the memoirs of María Luisa Elío, originally from Navarre, On the Empty Balcony (En el balcón vacío, 1962) is one of the most essential films of Republican exile cinema. The restoration work carried out at EQZE was conducted following research stemming from Luis Alberto Juárez's master's final project. This project has the support of the Government of Navarre and the collaboration of Filmoteca UNAM.

Ricardo Ruales's first feature film, Rotacismo, will premiere tomorrow at the Sheffield Doc Fest festival. The feature film by the 2021-2022 Filmmaking Studies student from EQZE is competing for the Best First Feature award.

The submissions of Asier Aranzubia, Zigor Etxebeste and Paula Arantzazu Ruiz have been selected for the third edition of the José Ángel Herrero-Velarde Grants, promoted by Gipuzkoa Provincial Council’s Department of Culture.

The Sinais section of the Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico S(8) (June 3-8) features the films Bologna, 24 de junio, and PBF #01, Madrid by Borja Rodríguez; Viento by Sofía Acosta Varea and Anaís Córdova-Páez; Marrona Libre by Natalia Mamani and Rodrigo Sousa; and Ulía by Laura Moreno Bueno. The Desbordamientos section, dedicated to expanded cinema, presents La belleza en los rayos de luz fracturados, the latest performative work by the Tekno Fantasy collective, comprising Laura Ibáñez Lopez, Camila Reyes, and Iker González. Finally, Paola Buontempo's project, Oh mono, adiós, has been selected for INPUT, the festival's film project tutoring and advisory space. 

The Talentuaren Gunea initiative hosts the presentation of four developing projects by EQZE students. The projects by Daniel Alegrete, Ivan Bustinduy, Inés Calero, and Saioa Miguel are participating in the third edition of the event organized by Zineuskadi.

Camilo Restrepo's work is featured in one of the festival's main sections, where The Room of Shadows will be screened. The latest films by Laura Dávila Argoty, Julen Etxeberria, Mario Veloso, and Valentina Pelayo are participating in different competition sections.

Clara Sánchez-Dehesa, EQZE's Film Preservation Studies coordinator, along with students Juliana Príncipe, Daniel Ángeles Hernández, and Renata Arcos, will participate in the 2025 edition of the APEX (Audiovisual Preservation Exchange) gathering. This event will occur in Guadalajara, Mexico, from May 26 to June 6.

Under the title ‘The Colour Fantastic Revisited. Across Global Histories, Theories, Aesthetics, and Archives’, this year’s conference will take a fresh look at a key topic of study in the history of the meeting: colour in film. The aim of the conference, which revisits this year the same topic it analysed in the very first year it was held, is to explore current challenges in this field.

"Corpi nella lotta" ("Bodies in Struggle") is a film season by Matteo Giampetruzzi, a Film Curating studies student from EQZE's 2023-2024 class, that explores the HIV epidemic through its cultural and political dimensions.

‘ZINEMA GOXOA’ is a proposal developed by students on the Film Curating Studies course that aims to rekindle the joy of going to the cinema. The season will comprise a series of six free sessions beginning on 25 May and ending in December.

The film by the student of the sixth graduating class of EQZE has been selected for the official short film section of the Cannes Film Festival.

Documenta Madrid hosts the world premiere of Pneuma, the latest work by Adrià Expòsit-Goy. The short film by the student from the sixth graduating class of EQZE is participating in the National Competition of the festival.

Three films developed at EQZE are participating in the Play-Doc festival. El tercer paisaje (Julen Etxebarria) and The Room of Shadows (Camilo Restrepo) are part of the International Competition, and O costume do travallo (Luis Morla) is in the Galicia Competition. Play-Doc, the Tui International Film Festival, will occur from May 7th to 11th.

This week, Archivo Kaikaya, with the support of the Honduran Film Institute, is organizing Recovered Cinema Week in Honduras. The event's program includes many films digitized within the framework of Film Preservation Studies and the research processes of Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola.

The short film La nostra habitació by Jaume Claret Muxart will participate in the International Competition of IndieLisboa (May 1-11) after its premiere earlier this year at IFFR. Two other titles produced at Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, such as La durmiente by Maria Inês Gonçalves and Duas vezes João Liberada by Paula Tomás Marques, are part of the National Competition program. In this same section, Quem se Move by Stephanie Ricci, a short film made before her incorporation into the center, will also participate. On the other hand, IndieLisboa Lab, the festival's mentoring space, has selected two projects in development by EQZE students. These are Pela Boca Morre o Peixe by María Novo and Eu Tenho Pavor da Velhice, also by Stephanie Ricci.

The International Federation of Film Archive yearly meeting, which is held in Montreal, will explore the role of film archives in creative contexts. EQZE will present a paper on the work carried out within the framework of the project ‘Second Hand’, dedicated to researching and recovering films that reuse materials made by others. 

Ulysses by Hikaru Uwagawa, a student from the fourth class of EQZE, is among the titles programmed in the International Competition of the Jeonju International Film Festival (South Korea). The film, developed during his stay at the school and the Ikusmira Berriak residency, premiered last year at FIDMarseille.

Juliana Arana Toscano and Ana Júlia Silvino have curated two programmes that explore the traces left by memories and propose a reinterpretation of music composed by female artists. The programme results from an invitation extended by the Belgian festival to the school.  

The 64th edition of FICCI presents the world premiere of Dos veces bestia, the first feature film by Luis Esguerra, an EQZE student. In addition to other feature and short films developed at the school, the festival will also host the program "Costas: Archivos de la diáspora", curated by Laura Alhach, which includes several films digitized at EQZE.

The festival presents feature films developed at the school, such as El diablo fuma (y guarda las cabezas de los cerillos quemados en la misma caja) by Ernesto Martínez Bucio, and short films like Luz ígnea by Catalina Giordano, El tercer paisaje by Julen Etxeberria, and La nostra habitació by Jaume Claret Muxart. Four other projects by EQZE students will participate in D’A Film Lab.

CPH:DOX premieres Who Witnessed the Temples Fall, the debut feature film by Lucía Selva. The first film of the EQZE Filmmaking Studies student is part of the Danish festival's NEXT:WAVE section.

Paolo Tizón, a Filmmaking Studies student from the fifth promotion of EQZE, has won the Silver Biznaga for Best Direction. His film, Vino la noche, participated in the festival's Official Documentary Feature Film Section.

Cinéma du Réel will host the premieres of REZBOTANIK by Pedro Gonçalves Ribeiro and Selegna Sol by Anouk Moyaux. The festival has also organized the program "Cuba, cinéma retrouvé" (Cuba, cinema rediscovered) in which several films restored at the school will be screened. Carlos Muguiro Altuna, director of EQZE, will be part of the jury of the festival's official section.

After winning the prize for the best debut work at the Berlinale, El diablo fuma (y guarda las cabezas de los cerillos quemados en la misma caja) by Ernesto Martínez Bucio is due to premiere in France within the framework of the Compétition Long-métrage de fiction, dedicated to fictional feature films, at Cinélatino, Rencontres de Toulouse (21-30 March). Another two films developed at EQZE will also be participating in the festival: Vino la noche by Paolo Tizón and Una sombra oscilante by Celeste Rojas, which will be competing in the Compétition Long-métrage documentaire and Découvertes Documentaire sections, respectively.

Vino la noche by Paolo Tizón and Pirópolis by Nicolás Molina compete in the Official Documentary Feature Film Section of the 28th edition of the Malaga Film Festival (March 14-23). The short film El tercer paisaje by Julen Etxebarria has been selected to be screened within the Málaga Short Corner. This event is one of the initiatives of MAFIZ, the festival's industry section.

Three researchers will receive a grant of 3,500 euros and 2 weeks’ use of a workspace at the Filmoteca Vasca. The period for submitting projects opens next Friday 7 March and will remain open until 22 April

Ernesto Martínez Bucio's first feature film competed in Perspectives, the new section of the festival dedicated to debut fiction films. In this section, which included 14 films, was also Duas vezes João Liberada by Paula Tomás Marques, another film developed in EQZE.

The enrolment period for the three master's programs at EQZE starts on February 1st and ends on 28th. An online information session will be held on February 6th.

In addition to the projects of the two EQZE alumni, Fede Gianni, Kathy Mitrani, Joana Moya and Daniel Soares have been chosen from among the 487 applicants. The retrospective to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the film-making residency begins tomorrow, on January 25.

Two films developed at EQZE, The Devil Smokes (and Saves the Burnt Matches in the Same Box) (Ernesto Martínez Bucio) and Duas vezes João Liberada (Paula Tomás Marques), will compete in Berlinale Perspectives, the new section of the festival that begins on February 13th.

The Rotterdam Film Festival will host the premiere of several films by EQZE students. La durmiente by Maria Inês Gonçalves will be presented in the Tiger Short Competition, while La nostra habitació by Jaume Claret Muxart, Skeyesee by Jimmy Schaus, and Those Who Move by Stephanie Ricci are part of the Short & Mid-length section.

A selection of moving images of pieces from the collection of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa will be exhibited at the Photomuseum in Zarautz until June. These images are part of the research project 'Kinetic Pieces and Scopic Avant-Gardes' by EQZE and Gordailua.

Sticking Place Books has published Filmmakers Thinking by Adrian Martin. This is a new edition of the book commissioned to the author in 2022 and originally published by EQZE.

Una sombra oscilante (Celeste Rojas Mugica) and Ulysses (Hikaru Uwagawa) are part of the Official Section and the Latexos section of the galician festival.

"The Time of Hypotheses" is the event in which the Master's students of the three specialties of Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola exhibit the works they have developed throughout the course. The first week of this period concludes with an Open House day that will take place on December 13.

The films Olivia by Sofía Petersen and El diablo fuma (y guarda las cabezas de los cerillos quemados en la misma caja) by Ernesto Martínez Bucio are participating in the market organized by the Marché du Film of the Cannes Film Festival at Ventana Sur, the most important audiovisual content market in Latin America.

The project in development by Aizpea de Atxa and Maria Corriàs, students of the fourth promotion of EQZE, has been awarded the SEMILLERU Lab prize for (post)production at the FICX Festival Internacional de Cine de Gijón.

High (Daniel Alegrete), Las palabras (Paolo Tizón), and Buti (Marc Torres) are participating in MÁRGENES WORK, the development projects section of the festival. Ulía (Laura Moreno Bueno) and La película de mentira (Claudia Gracia) are part of the MRGENTE section program. This section will also feature two films made by EQZE students before joining the school, such as Erik(a) (Saioa Miguel) and Alguien, en algún lugar, piensa esto (Manuela Gutiérrez / ECAM).

Alex del Río will present his film Donostiako zuhaitzik handiena, and Antuca (María Barea and Warmi Cine y Video Perú, 1993), restored at EQZE, will be screened at the festival.

Una sombra oscilante by Celeste Rojas Mugica has received the Best First Feature Award at the ZIFF - ZINEBI First Film International Competition. Among the projects in development, the film Y así seguirán las cosas (Marina Palacio Burgueño) has won the ZINEBI Networking EITB 2024 award, and the project Piztiak (Saioa Miguel Moreno, Mónica Cambra, and Maria Aizpurua Ayastuy) has received the Sortzaileak award. More information about the ZINEBI awards here.

O jardim en movimento (Inês Lima) and Una sombra oscilante (Celeste Rojas Mugica), and the projects in development  Thais, Elena Jordi, 1918 (Marga Almirall) and Estranho, estranho, estranho (Gabriela Giffoni) will be presented at L'Alternativa 2024. "he Hall section of the festival will host the screenings of Ulía (Laura Moreno Bueno), Año y vez (Patxi Burillo Nuin), and Yo sentí tu luz atravesarme (Luis David Esguerra Cifuentes).

EQZE will participate in the seminar “Amateur Cinema: A Global History” (11-13 November) organized by the Filmoteca de Catalunya on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of amateur cinema in Catalonia. Carolina Cappa, head of the Research Department of EQZE, will present the work carried out in the project “Second Hand” about the Galician filmmaker José Ernesto Díaz-Noriega. On the other hand, the Archivistas salvajes collective, made up of students from the school, will present the project “Los subterráneos”, the first archive of Cuban amateur cinema.

Ave by Ana Cristina Barragán, Una sombra oscilante by Celeste Rojas Mugica and El tercer paisaje by Julen Etxebarria will compete at the International Festival of Documentary and Short Film of Bilbao, ZINEBI (November 8-15). Four projects currently under development will participate in the industry section of the festival. On the 12th, the initial results of EQZE's research project, “ZINEBI Collection”, which explores the festival's film archive, will be presented.

Daniela Delgado Viteri and Manuel Mateo Gómez, students of EQZE, have won two eSe8_LAB awards. These are development awards granted by the (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico festival to the finalist projects of the festival's INPUT program.

The Festival preserves more than 300 films shot on 16 and 35 mm, along with other materials, in the Filmoteca Vasca archives. In 2022, Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola began a research project to carry out a critical reflection on the Festival, to catalogue and preserve the collection, and to design a socialisation plan and provide access to the materials. The project will be presented at Bilbao AS Fabrik on November 12 as part of the ZINEBI Professional Forum.

Cineteca Madrid has organized three film program around the work of the Archivistas Salvajes collective. The group, made up of EQZE students, will present three sessions dedicated to Cuban amateur cinema on the 29th, 30th, and 31st.

A significant number of EQZE students will participate in the "Muestra de Cine Doméstico y Amateur" to be held in Mexico. The event is supported by the school in the digitization of the film materials that will be shown.

Adolfo Vicenzo, a Film Curating Studies student at EQZE, has organized the film showcase "Murmuros en el cine" at the Túpac Amaru cinema in Lima. This project proposes a reflection on the relationship between cinemas and the communities in which they are located.

Tomorrow, the 25th, Historia de pastores, the first feature film by Jaime Puertas Castillo, will premiere in cinemas. After its run at the Rotterdam, Jeonju, and Málaga festivals, the film by the third promotion EQZE student will arrive in Donostia's cinemas on November 15th.

In its new edition, the Granada Film Fest program includes the films Frialdad (Andrea Sánchez) and Ulía (Laura Moreno Bueno), and a focus dedicated to the work of Jaime Puertas Castillo.

The INTERSECCIÓN festival begins with the participation of EQZE students. Laura Alhach will present the project "Todos los ríos del mar" at Intersección Lab, and Laura Moreno Bueno will premiere Ulía, her latest film.

Una sombra oscilante (Celeste Rojas Mugica) and La selva oscura (Lucía Malandro and Daniel Saucedo) have been awarded the Best Chilean Film prize and a Special Jury Mention in the Latin American Short Film section.

The Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) hosts the screening of Vino la noche by Paolo Tizón in Mexico. The feature film by the EQZE student is part of the documentary section of the festival.

Una sombra oscilante (Celeste Rojas Mugica) and Tú me abrasas (Matías Piñeiro) will be screened at the Viennale. Both films, developed at Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, are part of the selection for the 62nd edition of the festival, which begins today in Vienna.

Vino la noche (Paolo Tizón), Muyurina – Itzuli Mitzuli Diana Castro) and Pirópolis (Nicolás Molina) participate in Doclisboa. The projects “Buti” (Marc Torres) and “Las palabras” (Paolo Tizón) will take part in the sixth edition of the festival's RAW residency program. The two projects developed at EQZE will receive mentoring at Doclisboa and at the Márgenes Festival.

The 20th edition of the La Plata International Independent Film Festival FESTIFREAK hosts several productions developed within the framework of the EQZE studios. Tú me abrasas (Matías Piñeiro), estrelladistante and Una sombra oscilante (Celeste Rojas Mugica), Ulía (Laura Moreno Bueno), Yo sentí tu luz atravesarme (Luis Esguerra Cifuentes) and Frialdad (Andrea Sánchez) participate in different sections of the festival. On the other hand, Manuel Muñoz (student of the seventh graduating class) will premiere Los reinos, a work made before he entered the school, in the Argentine Feature Film Competition.

La selva oscura ( Lucía Malandro, Daniel Saucedo), Una sombra oscilante (Celeste Rojas Mugica) and Tú me abrasas ( Matías Piñeiro) participate in FICValdivia.

The students of the last two promotions have participated in a meeting with Béla Tarr in Pamplona. The Hungarian filmmaker visits the city on the occasion of the Encuentros de Pamplona / Iruñeko Topaketak.

Frialdad by Andrea Sánchez and Ulía by Laura Moreno Bueno participate in the festival's Cosmos Official Selection.

“Senda” the project in development of Mikele Landa, EQZE student, has won the Casa Wabi-ESCINE award in the framework of SSIFF 72. The award consists of an artistic residency in Puerto Escondido, Mexico. 

This week began in Valencia the annual meeting of IASA (International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives). EQZE students participate with their projects in this new edition entitled “Interweaving disciplines”.

Camilo Restrepo to present the project ‘La Chambre d'ombres’ (The Room of Shadows) comprising both a book and a film. Films restored at EQZE together make up the season ‘En la otra isla’ [On the other island], organised jointly by the SSIFF and the Basque Film Archive. Short films made in the ‘Memorias sinvergüenzas. Reescribiendo la historia queer’ [Shameless memories. Rewriting queer history] workshop will also be screened within the framework of the LGBTQIA+ Festival Encounter.

Hikaru Uwagawa presents his debut film Ulysses in the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera section. Julen Etxebarria's The Third Landscape is part of the Nest selection. On the other hand, Mikele Landa Eiguren and Marieke Elzerman participate with their projects Senda and Wash Over in Ikusmira Berriak, and Lucía Montero with Peter in the Lau Haizetara Documentary Co-Production Forum.

EQZE participates in the third edition of the Archival Assembly festival organized by Arsenal - Institute for Film and Video Art. Carolina Cappa, coordinator of the Research department, will present EQZE's digitized copies of La paz (Grupo Cine Liberación and María Elena Massolo, 1968) and 22 de mayo (Cine Urgente and Jacobo Borges, 1969) as part of the “Urgent Voices for Liberation” program.

The online platform “Flores en la sombra” of Filmoteca Española has exhibited the film Biarritz y sus alrededores (1922), digitized as part of the research project “Kinetic Pieces and Scopic Avant-gardes” of EQZE and Gordailua, Centro de Colecciones Patrimoniales de Gipuzkoa. The work has been made from a 35 mm copy owned by the Filmoteca de Andalucía.

The three filmmakers will share their work processes and materials, and will reflect openly on how they have shaped their films within the framework of the subject “Methodologies of Creation” that they will teach together. The Argentinian historian and archivist, Fernando Martín Peña, will engage in a research sojourn at the school. Today marks the beginning of the 2024-2025 Academic Year that will conclude in December next year.

On July 24 begins the third edition of the Cine Cauce meetings in Jarandilla de la Vera. The third edition of the project led by Eloísa Suárez, student of EQZE, has as its motto “Re-threading the history of cinema”.

This week has begun the shooting of Estrany riu, the first feature film by Jaume Claret Muxart, student of the first promotion of Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola. The project, conceived at EQZE, has participated in residencies and development labs such as Ikusmira Berriak, Residència de Guións de l’Acadàmia del Cinema Català, Mentoring Projects L'Alternativa and Spanish Screenings MAFIZ in Málaga. 

The latest works by Ines Limâ, Xavier Montoriol and Andrea Sánchez participate in Curtas Vila do Conde - International Film Festival. “Sóc vertical però m'agradaria ser horitzontal” by María Antón Cabot will be screened in the New Voices section of the festival. On the other hand, projects by Francisca Alarçao, Francisco Borges, Maria Inês Gonçalves, Pedro Gonçalves Ribeiro and Inês Nunes, EQZE students, will participate in the industry section Curtas Pro.

The second edition of the Global Audiovisual Archiving Conference, organized by Archive/Counter-Archive, the Eye Filmmuseum and TIFF, will begin tomorrow in Toronto. Carolina Cappa, lead investigator of the research project “Second Hand. Reuse and Deviations of Ibero-American Cinema” will present the initiative at the conference.

Night has come / Vino la noche by Paolo Tizón, a student of the fifth EQZE graduating class, won the FIPRESCI Award for Best Film and the Special Jury Prize in the Proxima section of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. An oscillating Shadow / Una sombra oscilante by Celeste Rojas Mugica (a student of the same graduating class) received a Special Mention in the Premier Film Competition at FIDMarseille.

The festival will host the first public presentation of Camilo Restrepo and EQZE’s project La Chambre d’ombres (The Room of Shadows). Three other films by students from the school will compete in the Premier Film and Compétition Flash sections.

A large number of projects carried out within the framework of Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola’s academic and research work will participate in this year’s Radical Film Network conference, which will be held in Madrid from 19 to 22 June. The aim of this year’s meeting, which will bring together representatives from universities, research centres, groups and associations, as well as independent researchers from all over the world, is to explore the ways in which we can reflect on archives from political movements, grassroots organisations, artist cooperatives and alternative spaces.

The group of EQZE students who participated in the restoration of Antuca will present their work at Filmoteca Española together with the film's director, María Barea. This new version restored at EQZE opens the second edition of the Peruvian Film Festival.

The films estrelladistante by Celeste Rojas, La selva oscura by Lucía Malandro and Daniel Saucedo; and Ulía by Laura Moreno Bueno are participating in the new edition of the festival. FICUNAM has also organized the seminar "El público del futuro" (The audience of the future) in which Eloísa Suárez, a student of EQZE, will share the experience of the "Cine Cauce" project, which this year reaches its third edition.

The project curated by Lorena García Espino, Film Curating Studies student at EQZE, brings together the work of three Latin American LGBTIQ+ artists in migratory processes who work on the link between image and self-representation from digital media.

Organized by Paul Bonnarme, Film Curating Studies student at EQZE, and with the participation of Takashi Makino and Stephane Gerard, "Kinotopia" deals with the absence of queer representation and memory in the urban periphery in audiovisual.

The feature film by Nicolás Molina, a Filmmaking Studies student of EQZE, premieres in the “Documentary Competition” section of the festival held in New York.

"España y guadaña. Espectros de un pueblo por venir" (Spain and scythe. Spectres of a people to come) is a program curated by Isaac Tejedor, an Film Preservation Studies student of the fifth EQZE graduating class. The cycle, which will end in July, begins with Les Anges exterminés (Michel Mitrani, 1968).

The proposals of Harri X. Fernández, Sonia García López and Carlos F. Heredero have been selected for the second edition of the José Ángel Herrero-Velarde grants, promoted by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa. A public day will take place on 22 June, including a tour of the archive, presentation of the first research works carried out under the grants and the screening of Battleship Potemkin.

Coordinated by Adriana Moscoso, councillor in the Madrid City Council and PSOE spokesperson on the City Council's Culture Committee, the seminar will focus on the law and policies for the organization and promotion of the audiovisual sector. Participants include Sydney Borjas, director of Scenic Rights; Patricia Motilla, partner at Andersen and specialist in the audiovisual sector; Marta Rincón Areitio, head of visual arts at Acción Cultural Española; Elena Manrique, producer; and Borja Cobeaga, filmmaker.

Lucía Malandro, student of the fifth promotion of EQZE and part of the Archivistas salvajes collective will host this presentation session of the project “Los subterráneos”, dedicated to the first archive of Cuban amateur cinema. This project aims to preserve these archives and provide access to these materials.

The (S8) International Peripheral Film Festival (Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico) hosts two projects of  Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola students. Urgencia de mediodía (Daniela Delgado Viteri) and Pakoré werà (Manuel Mateo) are part of the INPUT selection, the festival's tutoring and consultancy space for film projects in development.

Paolo Tizón, a student of Filmmaking Studies at Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, will premiere Vino la noche, his debut feature film, as part of the Proxima section of the festival. The film was produced by Diana Castro, Film Curating Studies student of the 2021-2022 graduating class.

Luiza Gonçalves and Lucas Larriera, students of the third promotion of EQZE, present at the Eye International Conference the ARTELEKU-NOGUI project that revolves around the audiovisual archive of the now defunct art center in Guipuzcoa. In 2019, EQZE activated "Generation Losses", a research project around Arteleku's video collection together with the Akmeka group of the UPV/EHU with the aim of proposing a model for the study, conservation and exhibition of those materials. The second issue of ZINE: Film Research Series dedicated a dossier to this project.

Students from Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola and Clara Sánchez Dehesa, the coordinator of the Film Preservation Studies postgraduate, are participating in the new edition of the Audiovisual Preservation Exchange Program (APEX) that begins today in Athens. Organized by the New York University Moving Image Archiving and Preservation Program (NYU MIAP) with the collaboration of Archipelago Network, APEX promotes collaboration and institutional dialogue for the preservation of audiovisual heritage.

One of the most prestigious parallel sections of the Cannes Film Festival (14-25 May) will host the world premiere of O jardim em movimento (The Moving Garden), the latest work by Inês Lima, a Filmmaking Studies student from the 2019-2020 promotion of Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola. 

The EQZE Filmmaking Studies student of the second promotion has obtained one of the two grants from the HBF+Europe fund for the post-production of her first feature film entitled Olivia. The grant from the fund associated with the International Film Festival Rotterdam is valued at 60,000 euros.

FIAF, the International Federation of Film Archives, has organized in April its 2024 annual meeting in Bangkok, hosted by the Film Library of Thailand. Entitled "Film Archives in the Global South," the meeting brought together specialists from film archives, universities and institutions around the world. Verónica Boggio and Margaux Chalançon, students of the Film Preservation Studies at Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, participated in the program with the presentations "La filmografía perdida" ("The Lost Filmography") (EQZE, Instituto Riva-Agüero, Filmoteca PUCP) and "Collaborative Practices as Resistance: An Attempt at Restoring The Freedom Giver (EQZE, Nadi Lekol Nas).

The short film,  a reflection on the Arab-Israeli conflict,  is based on unreleased footage from the film La Chambre d'ombres.

The programme (9-14 April) organised by the Film Curating Studies student group, consists of nine films and two audiovisual installations.

Sara Domínguez López, Alejo Duclós and Mireia Montané have curated three programs of films that explore topics such as the writing of history, identity, and cinematographic language itself. This activity is the result of an invitation from the Belgian festival to the school.

The project, which was developed at Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, comprises a publication and a feature film that is currently in postproduction. The two productions trace a pathway through works of art, films, books and photographs that aims to question the impact of representation on reality.

Historia de pastores by Jaime Puertas Castillo arrives at the D'A Film Festival after its screening at the Rotterdam Film Festival (IFFR) in January. The feature film by the third year student is part of the festival's "Un impulso colectivo" program. On the other hand, five other works by students of the center compete in the section "Un impulso colectivo - Curts". They are Topo estrellado (Antonio Miguel Arenas), Die donau (Jaume Claret Muxart), Memorias sinvergüenzas: Buenos Aires 1979 (Alejo Duclós), La película de mentira (Claudia Gracia) and Frialdad (Andrea Sánchez).

Three researchers will receive a grant of 3,500 euros and 2 weeks’ use of a work space at the Filmoteca Vasca. The period for submitting projects opens on 15 March and will remain open until 26 April.

Muyurina-Itzuli Mitzuli (Diana Castro Sánchez), Año y vez (Patxi Burillo) and Elisa (Paula González García) premiere in the "Termites" program of the "Lan" section at Punto de Vista Festival.

Die donau (Jaume Claret Muxart) and Historia de pastores (Jaime Puertas Castillo) are participating in the Official Short Film Section and in the ZonaZine Official Section of the 27th edition of the Malaga Festival.

Using local film archives provided by the Basque Cinemateque, the participants will make an archival film in the project “Gipuzkoa perdida y encontrada” ("Gipuzkoa Lost and Found"). This activity is part of the "Filmmakers Dialogues" program organized by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa. Rick Prelinger began his career collecting films of an advertising, industrial or educational nature in 1983. In 2000 he created, in partnership with the Internet Archive, a collection entitled the Prelinger Archives (now over 7,800 films), available for free online downloading and reuse. His collection of over 60,000 films was acquired in 2002 by the Library of Congress. He is the author of the films Panorama Ephemera (2004), No More Road Trips? (2013), All-Is-Well (2016) and Useful Prophecies (2019).

Fran Bouzas, a student of Filmmaking Studies of the first promotion of EQZE, will premiere his third feature film, Ciudad oculta (Hidden City), in the framework of the Berlin Critics' Week (Woche der Kritik). The screening of the film, the result of a collective process developed over more than a decade with a group of young people from the Buenos Aires neighborhood known as Ciudad Oculta, will take place on February 21.

The latest film by Matías Piñeiro, coordinator of EQZE's Filmmaking Studies program, was born within the framework of the school's community, which participates as an associated producer. A large group of students from different promotions of the center is part of the team that has made this project possible. tú me abrasas (You Burn Me) is an adaptation of "Sea Foam", a chapter of Dialogues with Leucò by Cesare Pavese published in 1947.

The registration period for all three EQZE postgraduate courses is from 1 to 29 February. Candidates may apply for scholarships from the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council and Ibermedia.

EQZE students Tatjana Fanny Honegger and Jaime Puertas Castillo will premiere at the IFFR International Film Festival Rotterdam 102 Narra and Historia de pastores, two films developed at the center.

In addition to the projects of the two EQZE alumni, Maria Elorza, Felipe Gálvez, Lucy Kerr and Cande Lázaro have been chosen from among the 362 applicants for the tenth edition of Ikusmira Berriak, which will take place in 2024. For the first time in the history of Ikusmira Berriak, two projects by Basque women filmmakers have been selected. The residency period will last eight weeks divided into two stays.

Filmmaker, essayist and academic, Mulvey is a seminal figure in feminist film theory. This encounter forms part of the activities of the EQZE research project ‘Genealogies of learning’  and takes place at the end of the 2022-2023 academic year, during the presentation of the students final projects.

Ibermedia’s evaluation committee underscored the soundness and ambition of EQZE’s educational project and highlighted its collaboration with the institutions involved with the school. A total of 14 students will each receive a grant  worth $3,571 to cover the tuition fees of the 2024-2025 course.

Dildotectonics by Tomás Paula Marques, a student of the third promotion, and Vitanuova by Niles Atallah (developed in the photochemical laboratory of EQZE with the participation of students from the center), will participate in the Official Section of international short films. Two projects in development Senda, by Mikele Landa, and La isla sumergida, by Lucía Malandro and Daniel Saucedo, are part of the selections of Zinebi Networking and Noka, respectively. On the other hand, Pablo La Parra Pérez, head of the EQZE Research Department, will participate in the meeting “Trabajar con (y desde) el archivo (Working with (and from) the archive)" together with Santiago Aguilar, main researcher of the "Zinebi Collection" project, which precisely investigates the festival's film archive. The meeting, which will also be attended by representatives of Filmoteca Española and the UPV/EHU, aims to highlight the work of institutions dedicated to the research of audiovisual heritage. Coinciding with his stay at EQZE as part of the "Filmmakers in Residence" program. Rita Azevedo Gomes will also be at Zinebi where she will receive one of the Mikeldi Honorary Awards.

L'Alternativa will dedicate to Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola a program consisting of a session of short films created within the framework of the school's studies and a meeting with the participation of Matías Piñeiro, coordinator of the school's Filmmaking area, Laia Manresa and Paola Lagos. On the other hand, the films Dildotectónica and Wild Flowers by alumni Tomás Paula Marques and Karla Crnčević will compete in the Official Section of the program, which will also screen Negu hurbilak, by the Negu Collective of which Ekain Albite, a student of the sixth promotion of the center, is a member. La merced, a project in development by Mario Sanz, alumni of the first promotion, is part of the Project Development Laboratory of L'Alternativa Pro.

Lim, the artistic director of the New York Film Festival, will teach a subject focusing on the tradition and practice of film curating, while at the same time working on an essay on the past and present of cinema. Azevedo, who last year premièred The Kegelstatt Trio, will work on developing her next feature film, A Céu Aberto, with the help of students on the Filmmaking Studies course

Die donau by Jaume Claret, student of the first promotion of EQZE, participates in the Seminci in the section "Punto de encuentro. La noche del corto español". Negu hurbilak, the film made by Ekain Albite, student of the new promotion of the center, together with the Negu collective, is also part of the festival program. Negu hurbilak will be released in theaters on December 15.

Noizko basoa by Mikele Landa and Emakumeak blai by Ane Zulaika are part of the Euskal Zine Bilera festival programme. The two films are taking part in the festival's Official Selection.

The 21st edition of Doclisboa hosts the European premiere of Celeste Rojas Mugica's new work. Developed at EQZE, the world premiere of estrelladistante took place last week at FICValdivia.

The Chilean festival's programme includes estrelladistante (Celeste Rojas), Tú me hiciste ver el cielo (Luis Esguerra) and Example #35 (Lucía Malandro and Daniel Saucedo).

Curated by Lucía Dellacha, a student at EQZE, ‘Dejemos que la casa se ensucie’ (Let the house get dirty) aims to explore films made by women from a feminist and intergenerational perspective. The season will take place at Kontadores over the course of four Fridays, between 20 October and 10 November.

Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola will once again be well represented at the San Sebastian Festival (SSIFF). Four projects developed at the school by students from the first five intake years will be featured in the multiple activities scheduled for the 71st Festival.

EQZE has opened its doors to the sixth intake year. The 2023-2024 academic year starts today and will conclude in December 2024, with the presentation of the assignments carried out at the school. The 46 students accepted onto the course were selected by the school’s Academic Management Team from among the 215 applications received from thirty different countries during the admissions period. 16 students will be receiving study scholarships, thanks to the grants awarded by Ibermedia, the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council’s Culture Department and the Paradiso Project

The Toronto Film Festival hosts the premiere of Ave, the latest work by Ana Cristina Barragán. The film by the EQZE Filmmaking Studies student is part of the festival's Short Cuts program.

Die donau (Jaume Claret) and Tú me hiciste ver el cielo (Luis Esguerra) are part of the Compétition Flash, and Wild Flowers (Karla Crnčević) is part of the Autres Joyaux section. FIDMarseille will also screen Vitanuova, by Chilean filmmaker Niles Atallah. Developed in EQZE's photochemical laboratory with the participation of EQZE students, the film will also be screened as part of the Compétition Flash.

A committee made up of members of Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola and the San Sebastian Festival made their decision last month on the three research grants promoted by the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council’s Department of Culture. The proposals chosen by the committee were those of Felipe Cabrerizo, Endika Rey and EQZE alumni Neus Sabaté “for the appropriate nature of their topic and methodology, their contribution at theoretical level to knowledge of national and international cinematography, and their use of the Festival archive as their primary resource”.

Today at Arsenal - Institut für Film und Videokunst e.V. in Berlin, four Cuban films digitised in the framework of the research project "Second Hand. Reuse and Deviations in Ibero-American Cinema" of EQZE. These short films (El negro by Eduardo Manet (1960), L.B.J. by Santiago Álvarez (1968), 79 primaveras by Santiago Álvarez (1969) and Oración by Marisol Trujillo, Miriam Talavera and Pepín Rodríguez (1984)) come from the holdings of Cinemateca de Cuba and are part of a wider ongoing research on the production of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry ICAIC. This screening is part of the activities of the festival Archival Assembly #2.

The English festival hosts the international premiere of the latest short film by Patxi Burillo, a student from the first EQZE class. Y arquitectura un sueño de palmera is part of the Shorts: Other Islands.

The publication also explores two other teaching projects: the reconstruction of an educational experiment based on two propaganda films in London and a film workshop run in a mining community in Bolivia

The latest work by Chilean filmmaker Niles Atallah is part of the Umbrales section, dedicated to experimental film. Vitanuova was developed in EQZE's photochemical laboratory under the coordination of Asier Armental, with the collaboration in the development and digitalisation of Celeste Rojas Múgica and Laura Óliver, students of Filmmaking and Film Preservation Studies from the fifth income of the centre. FICUNAM will also screen the films of two other students: Canto Errante by Génesis Valenzuela and While the Vines Weep by Laura Moreno Bueno.

Louise Martin Papasian and Celeste Rojas Múgica will participate in the INPUT section of (S8), dedicated to the development of film projects, with Y todos los montes altos que había debajo de todos los cielos. Helena Estrela, a student from the second income, presents Todo va a fallar in the Desbordamientos section. The short films Ulía (Laura Moreno Bueno), Las órdenes (Elisa Celda) and Corpúsculos (Laura Ibañez López) will be screened in the Sinais section.

His stay at EQZE, which will begin after the premiere of his latest film at the Cannes Film Festival, forms part of the ‘Filmmakers in residence’ programme, which combines support for guest filmmakers’ projects with the creation of a space for practical and theoretical exchange with students.

Aldara Pagán, Laura Moreno and Laura Ibáñez (students from the second, third and fourth income of EQZE) will screen their work at the Anthology Film Archives and MOMA in New York, as part of the programme "Colección privada. The Super-8 and 16 mm Scene in Spain" on 13 and 14 May. The cycle has been organised by Carlos Saldaña, EQZE alumni, and Francisco Algarín Navarro of Lumière magazine.

Vermelho Bruto and Dildotectónica, directed by EQZE alumni Amanda Devulsky and Tomás Paula Marques, won a Special Mention in the International Competition and the Best Portuguese Short Film Award, respectively. Misión a Marte by Amat Vallmajor also participated in the International Competition.

Sonnenhof (Tatjana Fanny Honegger) and Las estatuas (Natalia García Clark) will be screened in the Opening Scenes section, while Dildotectonics (Tomás Paula Marques) participates in the International Short Film Competition of the festival held in Nyon (Switzerland). Finally, Pirópolis (Nicolás Molina) and Vino la noche (Paolo Tizón) are part of the selection of the VdR-Work in Progress programme.

From 19 to 22 April, the programme will comprise a film series, a dance performance and an audiovisual installation.

The films Zehn Minuten vor Mitternacht  by Mario Sanz and Sóc vertical però m’agradaria ser horitzontal by María Antón Cabot, students of the first promotion of EQZE, have won the awards "Un impulso colectivo" and OpenECAM at the D'A Festival Cine. Barcelona.

The festival will screen Y arquitectura un sueño de palmera directed by Patxi Burillo, Noizko basoa by Mikele Landa, La voz rosa by Marieke Elzerman and No conozco la historia del fuego, a film developed at ECAM, by Sara Domínguez López and Luis Morla, EQZE students. The section "Súper 8 contra el grano" will also screen Rank and File (Silvia Harvey, 1973), a film digitized at the school by Laura Ibáñez, an Film Archive Studies student. Finally, Daniela Delgado, Film Curating Studies student of the second promotion is one of the filmmakers invited to participate in X Films.

Misión a Marte (Amat Vallmajor), Sóc vertical però m'agradaria ser horitzontal (María Antón Cabot), Los espantos (Jorge Castrillo) and Zehn Minuten vor Mitternacht (Mario Sanz) are part of different sections of the D'A Festival Cine Barcelona.

NIOBE directed by Laura Moreno Bueno and Un viento roza tu puerta by Jorge Castrillo participate in Ann Arbor Film Festival. The films will have their US premiere at one of the oldest and most prestigious avant-garde film festivals.

The grant will provide support to the production of original academic research studies following the launch of the Artxiboa website and the opening of its collection for consultation in Tabakalera

Candidates may apply for grants from the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, Ibermedia and the Paradiso Project. The 2023-2024 academic year at EQZE will begin on 18 September.

The school will distribute the money in the form of twelve scholarships, each to the value of $3,333, which will be awarded to selected candidates from any of the 23 countries that form part of the programme. The application will be made during the pre-enrolment process at EQZE.

The IFFR International Film Festival Rotterdam hosts the world premiere of La Voz Rosa by Marieke Elzerman, a student of the third EQZE promotion. The first screening of the film, which is part of the "Short & Mid-length" section, will take place on the 28th.

Maui Alena, Film Curating Studies student of the first EQZE promotion, has published his first book titled La casa de los anfibios. Conversaciones sobre cine. The publication is composed of fifteen interviews with filmmakers conducted as part of the 2018-2019 EQZE Academic Year.

The "Artxiboa" website represents completion of the first phase of the "Zinemaldia 70: all possible stories" project, started in 2018 by the San Sebastian Festival and EQZE to conserve and study the Festival archive, compiled since its foundation in 1953, while also making its documents available for consultation by the general public. The initiative enjoys the collaboration of the Filmoteca Vasca, Medialab Tabakalera and the Kutxa Fundazioa and is sponsored by Loterías y Apuestas del Estado.

El periodo de la residencia se prolongará durante ocho semanas repartidas en dos estancias. Las y los seis cineastas escogidos llegarán el 6 de marzo a Tabakalera, en cuyo Espacio de Artistas tendrán tiempo para trabajar en el desarrollo de su proyecto hasta el 16 de abril. En septiembre, coincidiendo con la celebración del Festival, regresarán a San Sebastián para completar las dos últimas semanas de residencia. 

Sóc vertical però m'agradaria ser horitzontal, directed by María Anton Cabot, EQZEalumni of the first promotion, has been awarded with the Audience Award at the Festival Márgenes. On the other hand, Peter, a film in development by Lucía Montero, student of the third promotion, has won the Music Library & SFX Award at L'Alternativa.

Mission to Mars by Amat Vallmajor, a student of the second promotion, has obtained a Special Mention from the Spanish Film Jury at the Gijón International Film Festival FICX. For its part, Wild Flowers by Karla Crnčević (student of the third promotion) has been awarded the Grand Award of Basque Cinema at Zinebi.

A casa do norte by Inês Lima, Argileak by Patxi Burillo and Un viento roza tu puerta by Jorge Castrillo compete in different sections of the festival; Belarrimotz by Zahra Vargas will be screened in the Hall space of the CCCB. On the other hand, the projects Peter and La alternativa de Tristán, by Lucía Montero and Jesús Lacorte respectively, have been chosen in "Mentoring Projects" and "Extremlab", two of the festival's development programs.

On 28 October the exhibition "Somewhere from here to heaven" opens at Azkuna Zentroa-Alhóndiga Bilbao, inspired by the filmic universe of Bruce Baillie, one of the most influential filmmakers of the North American film avant-garde. The exhibition, curated by Garbiñe Ortega, expands through the Zinemateka with a film programme in which students from Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola have participated.

The short film Los espantos directed by Jorge Castrillo, EQZE alumni, is part of the programme of the Granada Film Fest which starts today. | The artistic director of the festival is Antonio Miguel Arenas, student of the first promotion of the centre.

This Saturday will take place the public presentation of the third issue of the ZINE magazine published by Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Filmoteca Vasca and the San Sebastian Festival. The presentation will be attended by Beñat Sarasola, researcher, and Maialen Beloki, deputy director of SSIFF, authors of the main texts of the magazine dedicated, in this case, to the film work of Koldo Izagirre and the biofilmography of Antxon Eceiza. The presentation will be followed by a screening of Ke arteko egunak by Antxon Eceiza.

Before that, at 18:00, Maialen Beloki will present his publication "Antxon Eceiza. Vidas, tiempos, obras", published by the Shangrila association, accompanied by Santos Zunzunegui.

This collaboration will result, initially at least, in the creation of specific projects designed to research, conserve and disseminate Cuban film heritage. The outcomes of this collaboration will be disseminated in academic and professional forums, through a series of public programmes.

The film directed by Valentina Pelayo, student from the third promotion of EQZE, is part of the "Cortometraje Latinoamericano" competitive section of the 29th edition of the Chilean festival. "Trazos de silencio" was part of the programmes of FICUNAM and Curtas Vila do Conde.

The film directed by Mario Sanz, a student from the first year of EQZE, has won the first prize in the competitive section Penínsulas.  The film premiered in July at FIDMarseille.

The film by the student from the third income of EQZE is part of the Riscos section of the Portuguese festival, which starts today and ends on 16 October.

"Zehn Minuten vor Mitternacht" directed by Mario Sanz and "Los espantos" by Jorge Castrillo, alumni of the first and second class, are part of the Peninsulas section of the festival. Curtocircuíto will also dedicate a session to the new restoration of the film work of Eugenio Granell (1912-2001). The restoration has been carried out at EQZE by a group of students made up of Borja Rodríguez, Amaia Badiola, Julia Cortegana de la Fuente and Pablo Adiego led by Carolina Cappa. The Eugenio Granell Foundation, Filmoteca de Galicia and Numax are participating in this project.

In the new session of the programme Pasajes that will take place this Thursday at La Casa Encendida, several works made by the student of the second year of EQZE during her stay at the school will be screened.

The Icelandic festival is programming three works directed by students from the school: "Ella i jo"(Jaume Claret), "La sangre es blanca" (Óscar Vincentelli) and "El ruido del universo" (Gabriel Azorín). The three shorts as part of the "Spanish Shorts" programme.

Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (EQZE) will once again be well-represented at the 70th San Sebastián International Film Festival. A significant number of projects developed at the school by students from the first four intake years will be featured in the multiple activities scheduled for this year.

Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola has opened its doors to the fifth intake year with a welcome and orientation programme for its new students. The 2022-2023 academic year starts today and will conclude in fifteen months' time, in December 2023, with the presentation of the assignments carried out by students at the school. Over the coming week, the first encounters between students on all three courses (Film Preservation Studies, Film Curating Studies and Filmmaking Studies) and their coordinators will take place, and the syllabus will be presented along with the projects led by the institutions that form part of EQZE.

Disillusionment is a recurring concept in the Spanish cultural context. In the field of film, this idea has been developed from either a purely existential perspective or a political stance, something which characterises some of Spain’s principal productions during the Transition era. Although the discourse was different, as indeed was the political process, this disillusionment and ideological crisis also spread to the Basque cultural scene, giving rise to the creation of different works that, often in the midst of fierce controversies, generated a unique context.

The intake for each specialist course is limited to 15 students, up to a total of 45. The 2022-2023 Academic Year will commence at EQZE on 12 September.

Starting this academic year (2021-2022), Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola will be inviting prestigious filmmakers to live and work with the school community for short periods, within the ‘Filmmakers in residence’ programme.

The school will distribute the money in the form of fourteen scholarships, each to the value of $3,571, which will be awarded to selected candidates from any of the 23 countries that form part of the programme.

The residency will run for eight weeks split into two periods. The six filmmakers will arrive on March 14th to Tabakalera’s Artist's Space, where they will develop their projects until April 24th. In September, coinciding with the Festival dates, they will return to San Sebastian to complete the last two weeks of the residency.

Tabakalera will host, on December 4, the event ‘Another way of telling: presences, absences and representations of women at San Sebastian Festival (1953-1978)’.

Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (EQZE) is opening its doors with an induction programme for new students. The 2021-2022 academic year begins today and will conclude in fifteen months' time, in December 2022, with a presentation of assignments by students from the school.

Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (EQZE) has recently presented its 2019-2020 Report, in which it describes the activities carried out during the school's second academic year, which began in September 2019 and concluded in December 2020, and was strongly impacted by the worldwide coronavirus pandemic that disrupted all scheduled activities from 13 March onwards.

Eva Sangiorgi (Faenza, 1978) is to join the academic coordination team at Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (EQZE) as head of the EQZE Film Curating Studies Department. Artistic director of the Viennale, the Vienna International Film Festival, since 2018, Eva Sangiorgi graduated in Communication Sciences from the University of Bologna, before moving to Mexico City, where she earned a Master's in Art History.

The first issue analyses the cinematographic work of Nestor Basterretxea from the point of view of constructivism, and presents the work of María Jesús 'Tatus' Fombellida.

The school reiterates its commitment to a face-to-face teaching model which, during the first two modules of the course currently under way, accounted for 81% out of the 96% of the syllabus covered. The 2021-2022 Academic Year will commence at the EQZE on 13 September.

The residency period will be eight weeks. If the state of the pandemic makes this possible the five film-makers will arrive in Tabakalera on 15 March, where they will have until 25 April to work on their projects. In September, coinciding with the celebration of the Festival, they will return to San Sebastian to complete the last two weeks of the residency, with the project at a more advanced stage, in order to share it with the film industry.

The cases studies will now focus on the controversy surrounding the First Film Students Meeting in 1960, the problems suffered by the New American Cinema retrospective programmed in 1968, and the tense 1971 edition, marked by prohibition of the films Canciones para después de una guerra (Basilio Martín Patino, 1971) and Liberxina 90 (Carles Duran, 1970).

The XIX edition of Nest, San Sebastian Festival’s international competition for short films by film students, has selected thirteen short films from amongst the 348 submissions received from 165 schools in 49 countries. The chosen works, seven signed by male filmmakers and six by female filmmakers, come from schools in Argentina, Cuba, Germany, India, Spain, the UK and the USA.

The programming of the sixth module in the academic syllabus also includes a workshop on home-made emulsions, to be given by Esther Urlus, another dedicated to digital restoration with Lorena Bordigoni, the UPV/EHU summer course entitled 'A critical glance at film festivals: history, culture and politics' and the opening in Artium of the exhibition 'The Festival has run for 24 years. We don't like it', organised in collaboration with the San Sebastián Film Festival.

'Ya no duermo' (I no longer sleep), the debut work by Marina Palacio (San Sebastián, 1996), a member of the first intake year at the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, will be premièred at the 68th San Sebastián International Film Festival (SSIFF). The film will be screened in the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera section, San Sebastian Festival’s all-encompassing competitive section.

The Argentinean filmmaker ("La princesa de Francia", "Hermia y Helena", "Isabella") has premiered his films at events such as the San Sebastian Film Festival, Berlinale, Locarno, Toronto, Bafici and Viennale

The San Sebastian Festival, the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola and Artium, the Basque Museum-Centre of Contemporary Art in Vitoria-Gasteiz, will present the exhibition entitled The Festival has had 24 editions: We don't like it, running from September 9 until December 8.

The course is an introduction to festival studies, establishing dialogues between the past, present and future. The talks will address a historical analysis of international film festivals and their relationship with the main contemporary social and political changes, while the round tables will open a space for discussion on the present and future of these cinematic gatherings.

Carlos Muguiro: 'the important thing, which is difficult to measure in quantitative terms, is this project's power to bring about social and personal transformation in the medium term'.

The admissions period for the 2020-2021 academic year at Elías Querejeta Film School (EQZE) will open on 1 February and conclude on 15 May. EQZE will carry out an initial selection from among those candidates who apply during the first half of the period. The 2020-2021 academic year at EQZE will begin on 14 September.

The school will distribute the money in the form of ten partial grants (travel expenses), each totalling 3,000 dollars, available to students enrolled at the school during the next academic year (2020-2021) from any of the twenty-one countries funding the programme.

The founder of the distribution company Ciné-Femmes International, Vivian Ostrovsky, will recall the cycle of films made by women which ran in 1978. There will be a screening of ‘Expediente’, directed by Carlos Rodríguez Sanz and Manuel Coronado, Golden Shell for best short film in 1977, and a performative intervention by Luis López Carrasco and Raúl Liarte.

For the first time, the residency will last eight weeks - two more than the last edition. The five filmmakers will arrive in Tabakalera on 2 March, where they will have time to develop their projects until 12 April.

Foreign students accepted onto the 2019-2020 course come from a range of different countries, including Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, South Korea, Cuba, Ecuador, the US, Finland, Italy, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay.

Over the course of these four weeks, Raven Jackson, Martina Juncadella, Alberto Martín Menacho, Aitziber Olaskoaga and Michael Wahrmann—the five film makers selected from among 174 entrants—have developed their projects in Tabakalera’s Artist’s Space.

According to the agreement, the UPV/EHU will recognise the current postgraduate degrees as official Master’s degrees. While working in collaboration with the UPV/EHU, the school will retain complete autonomy, with its current pedagogic project unchanged. The period for applying for a place on the courses starts this Friday, 1 February, and ends 31 May.

'Eskolatik' is a twofold initiative, since it is both a window onto the Elías Querejeta Film School (EQZE) and a programme  that emerges from that very school. Once a month throughout the academic year, students at the EQZE will programme a session at the Tabakalera cinema, during which they will screen films linked to their syllabus, their work as filmmakers and their concerns and interests regarding the art of filmmaking.

The purpose of the Seminar of Criticism and Analysis Sessions is to provide students at the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola with tools, as well as a certain perspective, for defining their professional lives after studying at the school. The event, organised by the EQZE and the San Sebastian Festival, will have the participation of professionals and specialists from different industry spheres.

Students at the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola Film School will put together the programme for the new video art exhibition which will be held this Christmas in the streets of Pamplona’s Historic Quarter. The Pamplona City Council has signed a collaboration agreement with the school to support the initiative, which will take place from 21 December to 1 January in various areas of the city centre.

New approaches to feminist cinema, the conservation of film archives and Basque cinema are added to the research projects devoted to Andrei Tarkovsky and the San Sebastian Film Festival. A collection of digital publications will take a fresh look at Basque cinema and audiovisuals. Students will actively take part in these international projects, the results of which will be made public in various formats

This fourth annual edition will be the last one under Ikusmira Berriak's current structure. The next edition will be divided into two stays: one in February and one in September. The call for the fifth edition, which will be held in accordance with the new model, will close on the 31st. In October, the five selected projects will be unveiled.

The students are made up of 60% women and 40% men. 10 come from the Basque Autonomous Community, 17 from the rest of Spain and 18 from abroad (11 from Latin America). EQZE will have foreign  students from Andorra, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, United States, Mexico, United Kingdom, Serbia, Thailand, Ukraine and Venezuela. The average age is 29 years old.

Residents will develop their projects for four weeks between February and March, during which they will attend workshops for film-makers and directors and will be advised by members of the expert committee. From March to September, the directors will continue working on their project with online tutoring from the experts, and then in September they will return to San Sebastian.

The selection committee, which is comprised of members from the Tabakalera International Centre for Contemporary Culture, the San Sebastian Film Festival and, for the first time, Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, has selected from Manuel Abramovich, Grigory Kolomytsev, Elena López Riera, Arantza Santesteban, and Nele Wohlatz out of the 155 offerings received from 31 countries.

The assistants will hear observations about Bergman, Bresson, Iosseliani, Kozintsev, the Lumière brothers, Parajanov and others. Amongst all of them, particular attention will be paid to Tarkovski's observations about Luis Buñuel's cinema. Julen Abasolo, Cristina Álvarez, Pilar Carrera, Xabier Erkizia, Till Fellner, Giuseppe Lanci, Adrian Martin and José Manuel Mouriño will take part in this event.

The San Sebastian Festival has created, together with the research department of the EQZE, Tabakalera and the Basque Film Archive the project Zinemaldia 70. All Possible Histories, with a view to generating a living Festival archive. The project, involving EQZE teachers and students, aims to generate reflection and discussion on the past, present and future of the Festival.

Within the context of the Curating speciality, the “Festival in progress” subject will be structured as a debate format and, as well as passing on knowledge, will provide an opportunity for the Festival itself to rethink its approach, re-examine its distinguishing features and question its strategies regarding its audience, the industry or media professionals.

His talk will range chronologically from the early period of program designed to entertain and titillate audiences to filmmaker specific programing and the foundation of a canon at Anthology Film Archives. It will also cover the critical reaction to canon formation, the arguments for celluloid projection, and the internal history of the American avant-garde cinema.

On the 8th of January Elías Querejeta Zine-Eskola will be opening the registration period in its three courses (Film Preservation, Curating and Filmmaking), a period that will remain open until the 31st of May. The places available are restricted to 15 students per speciality and the registration fee is 3,500 Euros. The academic year will start at the same time as the 66th San Sebastián Film Festival.

The first conference will combine listening to a preliminary selection of the unpublished classes given by the filmmaker with other artistic performances linked to his work will take place at Tabakalera. Andrei Tarkovski’s son, Harkaitz Cano, Xabier Erkizia, Ángel Gutierrez, Menchu Gutiérrez, Ruxandra Kyriazopoulos-Berinde and José Manuel Mouriño will be taking part in this event.

The "Cinema en curs" programme has two main goals: fostering the discovery of cinema, understood as art, creation and culture, by children and young people and developing the pedagogical potential of cinematographic creation in an educational context. The programme will be developed in the Basque Country by Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola and Tabakalera.

Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola has organised an international seminar for October 26, 27 and 28 on amateur cinema, films “without names” and the concept of authorship entitled Stories (and Aesthetics) About Anonymous and Orphan Cinema. The exhibition "Anonymous Cinema", which will host a selection of films around the same subjects will take place in parallel.

The Doré Cinema (Spanish Film Archive) in Madrid was the venue this morning for the presentation of the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (EQZE) film school. The school has been set up and funded by the Culture Department of the Provincial Government of Gipuzkoa. It will act as an international centre for film research, educational innovation and experimentation.

The singuler pedagogic project of EQZE will be implemented in three postgraduate courses: Film Preservation Studies, Film Curating Studies and Filmmaking Studies. For its part, the research and dissemination related side will start in October 2017 through various programmes and it will be the first to open the public activities of the school.

Carlos Muguiro will be the director of the new Film School to be created in Tabakalera, which has been promoted by the Provincial Government. The jury has agreed to declare as winner of the contest the project "The hypothesis of cinema", which will be managed by Muguiro. Four proposals took part in the contest called by the Provincial Government.

The Chief of Staff of the Deputy General’s Office and Regional Minister for Culture, Denis Itxaso, has unveiled the details of the new film school to be created at Tabakalera. To this end, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and Tabakalera have signed a collaboration agreement to enable a space on the ground floor to develop its film school project there.
